I just got shot of my mini P1's because they didn't grip the (abbreviated) handle firmly enough. I love the look of them, and still have the original versions, but they're just a tad loose for me, and I don't want to start bending them, etc. Sometimes function does have to trump form, even for things that can be considered "tarty." So I have the ESP Mini's and they work perfectly.

This is what I’ve used for the past 10 years. Best on the market. I love the look of them and they’re the most versatile. I combine mine with a jag rod locker if needed

Its strange how companies come up with ideas, i developed a magnetic butt rest that clips to the rod using a rubber strap back in 2015/16. The point where i shot myself in the foot was releasing pictures of it in testing, although identical in looks to the ND ones my design was solid and simply could/would not let the rod move forwards obviously that part of the picture couldn't be seen....

I use the Cygnet butt grabber ones. Basically the same thing but with a funnier name. Dead cheap (can get 3 for 8.50 if you shop around) and can’t fault them. I do like a bit of tarty tackle, but these do the job. The large size is very snug on my cork handles rods, takes a bit of force to get the rod in and out, when using bank sticks rather than a pod I have to hold down the buzzbar when lifting the rod otherwise I’ve pulled the bank stick out of the ground before.

Is there a local diving club/ golf course that has a pond diver? May be able to get your gear back?

Had this happen to me a couple of times. I like nd products but these butt ends are lethal. Replaced mine with jag ends. Hope you get your gear back sooner than later.

ESP. cheap, effective and reliable. Ultra simple to use. Always go with the KISS principle.

My take on this, I expect the line was trapped behind the spool for this to happen, if the spool was set reasonably loose that is.
Also I expect the rod tips were fairly low to the water, therefore the direct pull on the line would make the butt rest slide and separate rather than lift and separate, if the rod tips were higher the pull on the rod would create a downward pull down on the tip trying to part the magnetic connection, much harder to do than to slide apart.

Just my thoughts hope you eventually get your rod and reel back.

I have been using the magnetic ND butt rests for the past 12 months without any issues.

I have had some pretty aggressive takes and they have never slipped or pulled off.

Seems like a common theme, I can't believe sonik charge £50 per reel. I honestly felt bad selling them on after a couple of days of use and knowing they were crap.

For the same money okuma put out a reel which is blinding, I won't be buying sonik reels again that's a cert.

ESP - the old version if you can get them. cheap as chips and grip the rod perfectly - as long as you buy the right size.

I agree with others on here I really don’t like the ND butt rests at all, up there with the worst I’ve seen, my dad owns them but I really don’t rate them at all

I Think there terrible to be honest. Upwards they grip forward pressure which is where you need the grip there rubbish. Haven’t used them but a lad on the lake showed me his and wasn’t impressed at all. But the clutch sounds like the issue in this case.

This happened a while back now and no dead fish reported thankfully. I've put it down to a mixture of the line going behind the spool of the poor quality xtractor reels, the Nd butt rests not being strong enough and my own stupidity not checking these things before hand.

I've now returned the Nd butt rests and sold the xtractor reels for okuma inceptions, far better bang for the buck.

I also emailed ND and pointed them to bad reviews but they didn't want to know and sonik never responded to me after I mentioned the poor quality of the xtractor reels. Oh well.

Just hope that if they pull the rod out it isn't still attached to the now dead biggest fish in the lake - wouldn't be the best first impression on the new club.

Haven't seen the butt rests in the flesh, looling at them online I can't really see what stops the rod sliding forward (how stronf is the magnet?).

It could have been a combination of the rod being pulled forward and the butt being pulled up that overcame the magnet - although if the clutch was loose then that should stop it happening. Is there any way you may have forgotten to loosen the clutch?

I did eventually put it down to the reels, xtractor reels, sold the set I had after the line went behind the spool too many times to count, still an issue with the Nd rests however as I'd have expected them to hold for at least a couple of seconds so I could grab the rod.

I never leave my rods in the water unoccupied.

bad angling..

I can not see your rod being pulled in if your clutch was loose enough.. or was you socialising in the peg next door away from your rods?

Here’s to hoping the people on my new club are honest folk if they drag it out at some point. I reckon it must have been the biggest fish in the lake, or so I keep telling myself

Haven’t had any issues with the other xtractor so I never considered that Could be the problem and will never know as it’s at the bottom of the lake

If you had your clutch set fairly loose then it's an issue with the reel no? It's somehow locked up?

I’ve just had this response from ND tackle.

“We are very sorry for your rod and reel, but this is not our problem. If you want to return the product, you can contact Amazon directly.”

This was after explaining the situation to them. Fantastic customer service 10/10

About a week ago I purchased a couple of ND magnetic butt rests matched with ND carbon banksticks and 2 xtractor rods and reels. I’ve had a fair few fish on the xtractors and they’re a great bit of kit, along with the reels. The ND carbon banksticks are also spot on, I hope the tips last on them though.

However, the magnetic butt rests although first impressions were good I’ve had a take today with my clutch set fairly loose and accidently leaving my delk on silent and the rod has shot from the butt rest and into the lake. This was shortly followed by myself which was a good laugh for the guy on the opposite bank and has left me £100+ out of pocket as my new rod shot into the darkness.

I think I’ll be buying the ESP butt rests everyone’s raving about on here from now on.
