I've seen a pair of rare-ish s/h rods on Ebay..the seller has actually has three I'd like if they'll split another mixed lot. More rods 😂😂
Relatively new seller- registered 5 months ago only sold a few small items before this, now they are selling a few lots of older but higher end rods.

Described as used but VGC, the pictures aren't great, tips, butts, brand name..no detail of the rings.
Don't appear to have shortened tips..was caught on that a few years back.
Seem to be a little too cheap although all things considered the BIN price is probably about right for a private sale..forum prices.
But the seller is 130 miles away.and would only post if I arrange the collection.,
That puts the risk on me even though they pack the rods.👍👎
Been there before too with a £400 item, , seller must have thrown in box in the dark, ran out of tape and thought Fck it.
There is some haggling room as there is an option to make an offer under the BIN I guess I could make an offer to include shipping and retain the Ebay/pay-pal cover.

Or should I take a day to drive up .£70 in juice and collect or wait for some to come up closer to home?

For years I was after a set of ESP Vertex’s in the highest TC of 3.75 for long range work. I already had a set of 3.25’s so knew how good these rods are.

A pair came up on Fleabay, bloke had less than 10 transactions to his name, wouldn’t post ,1 photo that was a zoomed in close up of the name and TC on the underside of the rod. The description merely stated the rods name, TC and in good condition.

As I’d been trying to find a set forever and at £40 which is a steal I decided to take a punt, so I drove to collect them, full tank of fuel which was £80 odd quid at the time.

On arriving at the blokes house he was a really nice bloke and he opened the garage door to show me the rods. I was gobsmacked. They were absolutely mint, I couldn’t even tell if they’d been used at all. The shrink wrap handles were still unmarked in any way and the butt caps didn’t have a single scratch on them.

A real result. Still trying to track down a third one years on.

I’d be driving and meeting him, your potentially buying rods which are not useable, Ebay would be a pain to also recoup your money.

virtually the same, mispelt title, no bags, picture lying on concrete garage floor.
thats the thing, could be years in waiting for the pair to come up but the fuel cost would put them into above average pricing.

I don't need them but not sure if I want them enough to pay £70 over the fair asking price

could be years in waiting for the pair to come up

Just go and look at them, might lose the fuel money, but as you say, might be years until more come up, and if they're right, you'll be happy.
Could always ask the seller for more pics, I've just done that and normally they're happy to do it.

I don't even bother saying to the wife anymore...I'd quite like these...and then...they've gone...as it just annoys her too much 😂....and me too tbh!

It’s really down to how much you want them. We all love a bargain but then again most of us have probably paid a bit over the odds for a really desireable item.

The story behind my rods was that the seller was given them and a few other random items by his mates widow when he died. He’d packed up fishing due to ill health and sold all his gear. These bits were found in the attic and corner of his garage. His widow gave them to his mate with the instructions to take anything he wanted and sell off anything he didn’t and put the money to a few drinks in the pub with his mates to remember him. He hadn’t been an eBayer before hence low transactions and ****ty descriptions. Because of the no postage stipulation no one showed any interest and with a low start price I was the only bidder.

So although it’s always wise to be cautious and treat everyone as dodgy until proven otherwise, there are some genuine people out there and if the item warrants a bit of a leap in the dark then maybe a calculate risk. Paying over the odds though is something only you can decide.

I had a similar lucky turn, I was looking for a s/h set of Aviator plus 13ft, custom built to my spec. After 2 years of looking a set came up, in fact 4 rods, listed as collection only about 15 miles from home. I put in a low bid, and nobody else bid. I ended up getting them for £200 quid each as new, built by Kevin Clayton virtually the same spec as I would have chosen. It was near Christmas, and I felt so guilty i gave the seller a £100 bag of booze as a present. He seemed happy enough, turns out his mate won them in a competition and gave them to him. Only used once in France. Happy days.

and for some reason the pictures appear to be screen shots
.I'm not convincing myself that I want them...am I,.😂
it's £300 for £230 quids worth of rods

Been on the sore end of ebay deals, some years back i won 3 FBSs for the opening bid, tbh it was what they would have gone for in the CF classifieds but it ended christmas eve.
I asked to collect and pay cash boxing day which meant driving down to Guilford .
A few hours later the seller replied to tell me that his lockup had been broken into and all his gear had been (in)conveniently nicked.

And then there was two 9ft stalking rods made by a long gone tackle shop.
They turned up and one had a 5ft butt section, the other had a 5 ft tip..neither fitted the other section.
And a pair of Sportex kevlars that were missing 4" off the tips.
Are you sure?
