I've seen various different electronic mosquito zappers from tackle companies and thermacell devices in the camping shops. What's the best gadget for keeping the bugs at bay?

Don't get a zapper they are pointless. They do work to an extent by zapping tiny bugs but that's because they draw them to your tent in the first place. Waste of money.
Thermacell is miles better but obviously more expensive having to replace the mats

I hadn't bought of that and it sounds brilliant to me, whack a light on to get as many in as possible then zap then - do they fry like they used to in my chip shop and occasionally get wasps that internally combust - I know I'm a bit Ted Bundy but would love that sound in my bivvy

I've got a Wolf zapper but have to agree with David in that it attracts more bugs in the first place . . .best positioned outside the bivvy but not ideal if you don't want a purple illuminated lantern over the doorway.
I generally use one of these -Lifesystems-portable-mosquito-killer-unit
Once the insert mats have run out I don't buy replacements but just saturate with the Lifesystem 50+ / MAX Deet spray which keeps them working effectively. Unit is v lightweight and batteries last for ages ..
For really evil mozzies nothing beats a Mozzie coil in a brass container on a bankstick IMO - however if the wind blows the smoke inwards you will end up with a banging headache in the morning . .

The zappers are only really useful if you zip up the mozzi mesh , and only open it when you get a run. The light they give out doesn't ruin your night vision which is also useful if like me you don't like using a white light.
I have one of the Flextail Tiny Repels, seems to work well, also get 10 free mats a month which you have to pay a fiver postage for but still works out a good deal.
I have one of the Static mozzie zappers and I find it useless, your at the mercy of, do they fly into it before they find you to feast on whilst you sleep.
I prefer to go on the offensive and bought one from Aldi's years ago for about £2.99, shaped like a tennis racket. Any mozzies I see fly in I chase down and zap them.
My usual night time procedure is to roll up some Kitchen towel (the paper stuff), roll it up into a long taper and twist it so it holds its shape, light both ends and blow it out and let it smoulder like a wick. It will give off plenty of smoke, might make your eyes water if you don't stand outside and drive out any mozzies in the bivvy, then when your happy, zip up the door quick. Any mozzies you might find, zap them with the Zapper. Personally I prefer to keep the door open, but, where I fish, its plagued with mozzies and when the mozzie mesh door is down you see them all gather on the mozzie mesh and all there probiscus's poking through the mesh trying to get you. And if you do not have a good fitted groundsheet, you will see the mozzies coming out of the damp ground on a night so it does not matter if the door is open or closed, they get in from the ground inside your bivvy
You only have to have one mozzie in your bivvy on a night and I liken it to the film "Alien", if you don't get it, it will get you and if you don't get it, your night will be a nightmare.

I use a Nitecore which burns thermacell pads. I had researched the flextail but some reviews weren't good (something to do with the device not heating the pads enough)

I find if you put it on its full blast setting for 5- 10 minutes then turn it down it works great

The static mozzie zappers are really for use with the bivvy door down which isn't very "carpy" of course. You should zip up, then put the zapper on and it will take care of any mozzie's left in the bivvy.
