Hi chaps, I was wondering if anybody had any experience with the OMC touchup hook sharpener. It looks similar to the PB products sharpener, which I already have which you put your point into, twist it about and you supposedly end up with a sharp hook. Sadly, my experience of the PB products one is that it just takes off the coating and does not seem to sharpen the hook in the slightest. Is the OMC one better?

Don't use it like that. Just use it as a file. I use the Gardner version to touch the hook points up when required.
Surely pushing it in will just blunt the point?

The OMC thing is a copy of something called "The Gom" which is marketed by LCE Tackle in France and has been for at least 5 years.
Not sure it's meant to literally sharpen the hook like a file but more to clean the hook point and touch it up a little.

No if it's like the pb one then you are meant to push the hook point in and then wiggle it out of it. The material of the sharpener is actually quite soft and does not damage the points at all, believe it or not. Unfortunately, my experience is that it also does not sharpen the hook!

I have one. It's actually pretty good. Pained me to buy anything omc but after having a play with one, it is useful. Blag Jag file is still used a lot more.

Ditto - I bought one on a whim in AD the other week and tried it on some blunt hooks that had already been over sharpened with a file just to see what happens. It did 'work' to a degree and hooks passed the nail test however its awkward to use and some points came out better than others . . .def prefer my Jag Black file

I have one and also the GOM
The LCA one (gom) is streets ahead and is brilliant for touching up hooks by pushing in and wiggling- the OMC one is just not soft enough and can turn the points on delicate hooks - the gom is one of my most used tackle box items - the OMC version is dogsht IMO

If you use The Gom do you also use LCE putty? It's bloody brilliant.

If you are used to sharpening.... Black Jag file & Gardner red point doctor.
Sharpening novices.... Red Jag stone & Gardner red point doctor is all you ever need.
The red point doctor is superb for removing the hooks hardened coating & final buffing. It will also extend the life of your stones or files ten fold.
