Is it worth getting full rebuilds done on rods that are 15 yrs old or just buy new rods
I've got a set of torrix that are 15 years old just wondering if it's worth rebuilding them or buying new blanks and getting rods built taking into consideration of the time and effort in stripping the rods down must cost a couple of quid
If the blanks have softened with age does this still happen don't know what to do for the better

I gave up trying to find someone to do some rebuilds for me so ended up treating myself to new. Probably didn't cost a great deal more too!
Also, probably better carbon out there now than what the Torrix was built on too.

Nothing wrong with old torrix.
I'm going to strip and rebuild a pair of ballistas, still sharp and crisp.
A while back I broke a tip section on a very old multicarp. I was worried that a new tip might be sharper/crisper than the other old one so I got two new tips.
I needn't have worried, the old tip was just the same as the new ones, with no softening.
I did end up using both new tips just so there was no cosmetic mismatch.

why do you want to rebuild them?
if it is just cosmetics, there are a few things you can do yourself to tidy them up

I'm sure jeffire will put me right if this is wrong but I'm fairly sure it's more like 20+ years ago that the resins improved so yours shouldn't have softened due to that.
I guess it depends how attached you are to them and what state they're in regards worth. If my Ballistas had been more modern I'd probably never have bought my new Torrix. Having said that new rods are not cheap.
As it was had my Ballistas re whipped by Colin Leatherbarrow as the varnish was going white when wet, think they cost £75 each 7 or 8 years ago. I think he's still active, his webby is

I had some rods rebuilt by Chris at CJS rods - good communication, done on time, decent price (I believe around £300 for three rods) and really happy with the results. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend him.
Thank lads just fancy a change looking at the same rods for 15 yrs gets a bit boring
So thought why not keep to what I know and like just renew or revamp 🤔

Just to let you know, when the rings were re whipped on my rods Colin found one of the legs hadn't been de burred properly prior to whipping, as such it had cut into the carbon. If you were so inclined that could seriously knock your confidence in that blank
Until it's stripped the builder won't know what they're going to find, if anything, hopefully though nothing untoward in the vast majority of cases.

Chris Palmer rebuilds plenty of rods, iirc, the only blanks he hates working on are ESP terry hearn rods as the handle part of the blank is separate from the main blank, and joined under the reel seat

That's interesting, I re-built my mk1 ESP Snipers a few years ago with full duplon and changed the reel seats - they also had a parallel butt section from the reel seat down, you could see the join and change in carbon, but it was not a problem. Guess they do it to save costs in production.
