Hi All,

So recently I have been Diagnosed with needing a Hip Replacement. It's come as quite a Shock to say the least as I thought I was still young LOL. Running 10k one day, then the next day I cannot walk. Im in a lot of pain and have not walked in 8 months since, so I'm looking forward to it, even though it's a bit of a operation.

I would love to hear from people who have had this done and still Carp fish. What are your experiences of it now ? Can you still enjoy Carp fishing or have you swapped to Coarse fishing as its a kinder way to fish for you ?

Love to hear what you have to say.. Any things to help me along ??

You will have 'hip precautions' for 12 weeks post operatively which will limit how far you will be able to flex your hip - may need to look at getting a higher chair for that period (if fishing during this time). You should have an OT assessment prior to the op where this will be explained in detail.

If you stick to your physio and work on your strength and cardio training you should be fine to fish as normal post recovery.

I feel for you, and I hope you get sorted quickly.

I'm not quite as severe, but after having Covid in 2020, and getting leg pains afterwards, within 3 years I'm struggling to walk with buttock, thigh, knee and hip pain in my right leg, I have been diagnosed as needing a hip replacement. I walk with a stick or crutch most of the time.
I probably didn't help myself with playing American football for 20years.


I'm lucky in my syndicate on most swims we can unload from the car and then put the car in the car park.
Otherwise even chub, pike and roach fishing I can't stray too far from the car. Pushing a light barrow is possible, it actually balances me out, but I do have to stop regularly if the pain gets bad.

I had to get a high chair, the lower ones I can't get up from. The Sonik SK-tec recliner is 'ok', but the extending legs slide back in, so can really only be used on a flat level bank.

Bedchair wise, Solar Undercover, I can get in and out of it with few problems.

Higher chair as mentioned, try and fish somewhere with your car behind, or mention your condition in membership/syndicate applications, SOMETIMES it can swing it for you.

Hi Neal, I had a hip replacement 6 years ago (now 63). I can honestly say once the program of recovery had ended, it made no difference to my fishing.

I did fish days only from about 6 weeks after the operation (with friends) but did need a lift to the venue and help with carrying my gear.

A friend of mine had a double hip replacement about 12 years ago, absolutely fine within a fortnight, back to work within 6 weeks. He's a made keen cyclist, bearing in mind he's now 76 he averages 11000 miles a year on a pushbike!! Most in and around the Peak District. Im sure a bit of fishing shouldn't be a problem 👍

Hi Neal,
I had a hip done Oct 2021 and recivery was fine and apart from a little numbness around the scar it makes no difference once you are up and about as normal.
The biggest tip is having a box at the end of the bed at home for a few days so you can slide yourself onto the bed as opposed to having to lift your leg up from sitting on the side.

I was put onto BIO OIL, about £17.00 for 125ml bottle
by both my surgeon and my physio.

Once you can bear it, and not sensitive over the operation area, this brilliant oil lightly rubbed in, and massaged over, can be very good for increasing blood flow through the tissue, and helps in Minimising future scar tissue visibility, by that I mean not so purple/blue hue, especially when cold.

I saw a friend get strip searched, on a return flight as they didn't believe he had a double hip replacement.

Would it be best on a hair?.

Had both of mine done around 7 years ago. I'm 56 now. I was back at work plastering within about a month. Fishing, I was back doing nights after a couple of months. Just take a bit extra care climbing trees etc and on wet slippy banks and you'll be fine.

I believe it will also qualify you for a cheaper disabled/concessionary licence if you get any disability certificate etc.

Thanks for the words of advice, it means a lot.

I'm in so much pain that I cannot wait now and I'm so glad that it looks like it's not going to stop me Carping. I've not had the pre Op yet till next week but there is so little info about afterwards, 3 months plus.. It all doom and gloom that I can see about not being able to pick things up and you can dislocate easily. 90degrees things and don't cross your legs or ankles.

Are you allowed waders/ Welles again because of the tightness of pulling your leg out ?..

What about weight of fish and holding them or picking them out the water?

Keep telling me your stories as it makes me feel better !!!

No disabled ticket or parking as it's classed as temporary. I do feel lucky it's fixable. Some people get things that cannot be treated, which makes me feel lucky !

Yes I'd have to admit most people would class me as part time I'm done and on my way home by 12 most days.

Same here , I allow myself two hits a day , always away by half two
