Can anyone confirm that the 8000 and 10000 size Shimano X-Aero Baitrunners have the same size spools (ie diameter and length) and the 8000 is just a bit shallower?
If so, why would the 10000 size retrieve marginally more line each turn?

It doesn't according to Shimano web site, the 6,8 and 10 all have the same retrieve and gear ratio so assume this only spool depth that increases capacity.

Oh. I read the spec of the 6000/8000 retrieval was 96cm and the 10,000 model 99cm

I'm fairly sure but not certain that the 6 and 8000 are the same except for spool depth/ line capacity. The 10000 is a larger spool hence the greater retrieve.

Assuming specs are correct of course .... Some guy has said on FB that he uses 10k spool on 8k reel with no issues so im hopeful are the same .... I always thought only the old XTE Super Baitrunners had the slightly bigger spool on 10,000 and everything since were the same except for depth. I now have the dimensions of the 10k spool so when my 8000 turn up i will compare

Shimano have done this for years, right back to the original Aero baitrunners back in the day. The 4000 and 4500 models had identical bodies with different capacity spools, but the spools were still interchangeable.
Obviously that's no help to your current dilemma though

They are the same. Got 8000's X's on Barbel rods.

For anyone interested i can confirm the spool sizes are the same ... Its just the depth that differs

I know they're quite an old reel now but thinking about a set. Would the 10,000 be too big for 10ft rod ?

Only you can answer that mate .... Perspnally i think they might be a bit big. I prefer my Okuma's Inc 6000 on my 10ft set up and 5000 size baitrunners on my 8ft set up ..... but ive read some people putting full size big pits on 10ft rods and shorter so i guess down to personal preference

For me it's all about the feel and balance of the combo. That depends a lot on the rod length design and build. Handle length and fittings. You need to try the reel on the rod you are thinking of buying and see if it suits you.
