Hi, going to start a campaign on the Thames and was wondering ,as ive never fished it, what the bottom is like ? Just curious to know what sort of lead set up to use wether its fairly gravelly or soft silty ?

I haven't fished the thames for over 45 years, but it really depends where you are I guess, everything from hard sand/gravel, to deep silt and shopping trollys, the odd blown safe, and occasionally a body or two.

Thames is one of the biggest carp fisheries in the uk.....
i very much doubt the bottom is the same throughout

I've swum across it a few times, but never dredged the bottom. Pick a spot and pull a lead across it. All will be revealed.

Terry Hearne fished it for years, and with great success, youtube has much of it documented.
It's certainly worth watching.

loads of vids and info online
location is the key - find the carp / stretch thats good to go - find the spots and the rest is standard carp angling...
keep it simple , put up with the bream and good luck

I have fished most of it and it's largely gravel where you expect to find gravel in a river and silt where you would expect to find silt. Sorry couldn't help myself.

But before you worry about the riverbed make sure the stretch you want to fish has actually got some carp left in it
because Tarka has been making some serious inroads into the Carp population in certain areas which is why the Barbel are making a come back

Chertsey meadows gets hammered by the poachers in summer, lots of pressure ,I'd be looking upstream of the weir in the quieter stretches, opposite Littleton lakes. if you get a boat you'd be able to plot up on the far bank and hide away. Better security for sure but I've no idea on land ownership though.
