Ok chaps, managed to snap 18 inches off the top of one of my Cotswold R1s last week, sending it off to be replaced . In the mean time Im looking for some new rods that will allow a few more yards on the cast, maybe up to 120-130 yards.. Been looking around at various rods, would like Free Spirit Hi-S 3.5 tc but cannot justify over 530quid each....so Free Spirit S-Lites at around 250 each look OK...anyone used them and can tell me what they are like.......waggling them around in shop doesnt really tell what they can or cant do.....anyone who can give me an idea or even recommend something else, budget 250-300 quid each?? Not custom builds I just want to buy them and start fishing not have to wait several months while they are built.....cheers

Your Cotswold R1 Rods should be good for those distances with relative ease.
Have you considered Torrix Te 12ft6 second hand as they will easily cope with those distances as well ?

my mate who builds rods is selling 4 x 12ft 6" Atrex with high spec build for £1000 for 4, so custom built at off the shelf price

bet if you went to a casting lesson your problem would disappear as your rods will easily do that save yourself a fortune

Agreed - I did a Terry Edmonds lesson, money well spent.
I also bought some 13ft 3.5 cork Aircurves as a 'relatively' inexpensive rod I wasn't worried about breaking; Greys have a great warranty, just in case. Used them for a couple of seasons to hit a 160yard mark (braid, 4oz lead, 10mm bait) & caught the big girl off it, so was definitely worth it.
I never did break them either! Am currently selling them (£350) as I don't need that distance at present.

As already said, your rods are more than comfortable at that distance, the thing that isn't, is you
100% have a casting lesson. It'll often add 30 to 40 yrds to your casts

Had a set of Greys aircurves. Could not get on with them to powerful for my build. Spoke to Century and got a set of ADV1's vast improvement. A mate last week let me have a chuck of his harrison torrix te's, for the same effort as my century's I put an extra 10 to 15yrds on.
Not saying lessons don't work but you do need a rod to suit your build and style.

Based on the original R1, it has a stiffer butt and mid section to enable longer casting and superior accuracy at range.
It is at home casting bags and leads over 130 yards or fishing close. In testing these rods have consistently cast in excess of 160 yards with a baited rig or small solid bag.
Not sure which R1's you have, but the 3.5lb TC's are designed for casting a long way, over 160yards.
I think you will benefit with some casting lessons and practice.

cheers Nick, I have the original R1s, 3.25 tc, totally agree about casting lesson but its not so easy here in France, maybe when Im back in UK for a week in January I can sort something.....part of the problem is I think, the fear of breaking the rod. I actually snapped one two weeks ago but not while casting.....when I get the new tip section back I will for sure look at getting a lesson or two....gotta be cheaper than 3 new Free Spirit Hi-S that Ive been looking at
