Fishing very short distance at around 15 yards, the bottom is hard and flat so figure slack lines would be best for this situation. But question whether this should light running lead or 3 to 4oz on a lead clip?

Running lead every time, clips are notorious for bad indication if the fish kites.
I regularly use 1oz leads for this.

Id go with a heavy running lead, or light lead on a clip out of those options. Have you condidered going with inline, fished either running or in a drop of fashion? personally though, i use helicopters for most of my fishing and dont change that based on distance.

If you are getting a few takes you could try one rod on each and compare?

I'm not sure how much kiting a fish can do with only 15 yards or line in the water, but my preference in this situation (hard, clear bottom) would be a nice heavy (4oz minimum), flat pear lead on a clip and semi slack line.

2oz running rig.... Or if you can Wade it on to the spot then a 5oz lead. We all know heavier leads give better hooking potential. Some may kid you and say leads have little impact when using running rigs but most fish will shoot off shaking their heads, thus moving the lead still.

I've used running rigs for years now, unless I've got a chod on. Going too light you do almost solely rely on the line tension for hooking potential, 2oz and slack lines I have found to be the minimum lead weight at close range and a super sharp hook. Get your line in the line clip on your rod and don't set the clutch too loose.

"I'm not sure how much kiting a fish can do with only 15 yards or line in the water"

That's easy, anything up to a 15 yard radius.

If it were notorious, then it would have happened to me at some point over the years, having used lead clips for decades, but it hasn't. At 15 yards, it'll be screaming off, every time. No need to over think it.

Thanks for the replies!

I will be wading to the spot and hand placing the rig in about 4 foot of water. No weed at all and flat bottom. I will be baiting with chopped and whole boile all around the around the area. I will probably start with a roni rig

Forgot to mention this is a lake in France, I fished there last year, the spot did me 3 x 50+ fish over the week.

If that's an attempt at simple geometry it makes no sense in this scenario as it doesn't allow for line stretch, a reel clutch or the bank.

Pedantic*, yes, but if you are going to try and proliferate this nonsense about kiting with pseudo maths at least get the fundamental theory correct.

It's a smart fish that can pick up sharp hook attached to a 5oz lead and move any distance without getting hooked.

If you can wade out even better, a 5/6oz lead on a clip or inline , short rig and a super sharp hook and they will have a really hard time getting away with it.

*Fat finger edit, have to admit that got me

I think that may have been an attempt at humour rather than geometry. Made me smile anyway.

Someone got it, Someone else takes themselves too seriously.
BTW, the word you're referring to is 'pedantic'. Just to be pedantic.
But just curious, how does a reel clutch or "the bank" affect fish kiting, you do understand the meaning of the term 🤔?

The pedantic spelling did make me laugh. Poxy phone

My point about clutch and bank was in reference to your ‘anything up to a 15 yard radius' quip.

A radius is a fixed distance between the centre of a circle and its circumference. In this case the centre of the circle would be the rod tip and the lead is at the circumference. If a clutch gives line the distance between rod tip and lead changes and the radius is no longer fixed at 15 yards. ‘Anything up to a 15 yard radius' becomes false.

The bank point refers to a circle having 360 degrees. On a 15 yard radius around the centre point of your rod tip a portion of that circumference will be on the bank. ‘Anything up to a 15 yard radius' becomes false unless the fish can kite onto the bank.

This is tedious, but my point was if you're going to be a smart a**e at least be smart.

I then nulled my own point by misspelling pedantic, so I'll shut up and say just use a nice heavy lead.

The clutch doesn't come into play if a fish kites. If the alarms and indicators don't react, how should the clutch ? I'm also curious as to your reference to "the bank", are you referring to the earth's magnetic frequency perhaps or the economy 🤔
