I've just heard on FB that Bury hill lakes in Dorking is closing in September - I've fished it since I was a kid! I'm truly gutted!

Fished there years ago and a lovely fishery. Fair play to the guy for wanting his retirement, not really sure his reason has gone down to well with the carp anglers though.... ‘Angling on the decline' If that was the case, i suspect it's probably down to poor management or something, as its far from declining🤷♂️ That said you can understand at his age why he wants to retire.

Read this myself yesterday. Seems a shame. One of the first waters I ever fished outside my local park lake for Carp. Freezing cold January morning getting a train down from Croydon to Dorking lugging the little gear we had to the lake. Being greated by the then head Bailiff Graham Rowles telling us we were mad to be fishing for the Carp and pike were a better option. Then proceeding to sell me mate live goldfish as bait. Beautiful lake even on a cold winters days. One of a kind back in the day. Taking a punt out to fish from. Only really ever heard of that on big ressi for trout. Truly a unique place.

I have in my possession a re mastered super 8 ,but on VHS,video of Graham Roles,my Dad and Uncles ,netting a private lake in Sussex for tench,to be put into Bury Hill..
The lake being netted was in Loxwood,and owned by FW Strowger and Co based in Mitcham Surrey..
I fished Bury Hill when up country,visiting,I was young ,but remember a big white dove coop..
Shame ,a history water gone,or going

White dove coop.. that's the one. Seem to remember one of them self service hot drink machine in the boat shed aswell. Must be well over thirty years since I was last down there. Bet its changed a bit.

Most likely I was there last 45 plus years ago..at least..!
I remember pig pens,and corrugated ones at that, I remember sheltering in the rain under one of those..
I been on those punts,I remember the click of my dad's centrepiin, the ratchet,and his pike gags in the cantilever box,his split cane rods and a Riley elf..lol
Plus being told off for talking, and making a noise..

First fished here also about 45 years ago, the bailiff Graham I think used to walk about in swimming trunks in the summer, coin operated warm drinks and a toilet you really wanted to avoid. Absolute shame it's closing, great memories of a less commercial age.

This place brings back many happy memories of when I was living Surrey/Middlesex and just got back into fishing after uni. Plenty of happy days spent in a punt down the jungle. Also remember a particularly entertaining wet day fishing Bonds when I had to baseball slide to prevent my rod being dragged in. With no change of clothes ended up driving home in my boxers with plenty of lorry drivers tooting their horns at me whilst stuck in typical M25 traffic

The new boathouse has appeared on Rightmove- it includes the estate lake as part of the deal so if anyone fancies a new house and keeping the lake as a fishery that would be great...it's up for £3M quid!
