Am looking at Tares (the most obvious choice), Niger seeds as well as black sunflower seeds. Can anyone think of anything else? Preferably dark in colour to avoid unwanted bird life!

I must admit I don't think anything is as attractive as hemp, but the cost of hemp is getting a bit much.
I have started using more and more pigeon conditioner and wild bird seed, I know it is not dark, but the birds do struggle with it with the small seeds, although if you are fishing boilies it can lead to pick ups.
I have noticed when soaking the black sunflower seeds float, because I tend to add Vitalin it doesn't make much difference if they still float after soak and boil. (I simply haven't checked or noticed).

Here's what I do to baulk out my bait rather than buy hemp,Poundland do bags of birdfood(no nuts) for around £2:25/£2:50 for a 2.5kilo bag(I think)they do smaller ones 1.3 kilo for £1 they also do a flake version in a blue bag for a £1 think it's got maize in etc.
Soak for 24 hours boil for 30/45 mins i flavour mine with either jars of curries or coconut cream and carnation milk (toffee flavour)which I use on the canal had my pb over this method, great way to save money.
I put in a 10 ltr bucket in the morning of my session then take 2 buckets with me on my session I believe it helps to stop the fish in their tracks as they are going up and down the canal during the early hours as that's when I have had most of my carp.

Another thumbs up for Pigeon Conditioner, I've used it for years and it's loads cheaper than hemp. As Nick says, not all of the seeds are dark but I can't recall ever having issues with birdlife. The only downside is that bream like it also, but the same can apply to most particles.
I'd add another vote for pigeon conditioner. Lovely aniseed smell to it, and dead cheap too. I normally mix with maize, mole Valley is great for it

Its lush innit its getting more expensive though, but its a classic, much easier to prep than hemp cheaper , I also like to think the differnet types of seed dont lend themselves to the carp getting focused on one particular food item. could be wishful thinking but it helps me
Lots of the firms that do frozen particle have this mix or similar. Some have a custom dark mix to avoid birdlife also.
