want would be appropriate kit (rod/line) for fishing a weedy lake with 40lb+ carp? No great casting distance is required

Any old carp rod will do mate. You don't need stiff rods for fishing weed. Stiff rods are for casting at range.
Any decent 18/20 lb line will do. Look for diameter ~.38/.40. Avoid pre-stretched lines as they have poor abrasion resistance. Gardner HydroTuff is an excellent line for weed/snags.

Agree with Yonny and suggest you focus in your end tackle. Strong line with good abrasion resistance. A good quality strong hook is also recommended

Some good feedback already
Couple of tips from me.
1. Make sure where you are fishing you can get a fish through the weed if you hook one
2. Make sure your rigs are as safe as possible so if you get locked up and your mainline parts the fish can free itself with little effort, whether that's a lead clip or a no trace bead on a helicopter set up, that's your choice. Micro barb or barbless hook will help too

Something with a nice lazy action with grunt in the butt to help steer

personally anything with Berkley is a sound bet (i am a big big game fan)
ive got a set of 3LB original velocity rods which i used for a 6 acre water with alot of weed and they worked nicely and were not broom handles fishing 60-70 yards.
a water im looking at this year is very small with weed and that is underarm work so i might give my 2.5 baby ballista a go to see how they cope.
