Hi all
What's the best size mesh to clean them, the one I picked up is 5mm and the maggots are just falling through
Thinking 3mm
Any thoughts
Cheers

The riddle isnt to clean maggots by letting them crawl through, but to riddle off the sawdust or maize meal they are in.
Riddle them off, add some fresh maize meal and they will be cleaned. The riddle can also be used to let the maggots crawl through to leave any casters behind.

Get a proper maggot riddle.
As in there are maggot riddles, squatt riddles, groundbait riddles.
It sounds like you are using a groundbait riddle

It's what am trying to find out, the one I bought was supposed to be a maggot riddle ( so he said) but they just fall through when trying to riddle the dust off them so obviously to big
When looking for one now ( loads of different ones) they are all different sizes 2.5,3,4mm and so on. Just wanting some advice for mesh size.
Wanting one so the dust goes through but not the maggots but don't want to buy one with a mesh to small so the dust/maize won't get through ( think that makes sense)

The three riddles mesh sizes areĀ 3mm, 4mm and 6mm. The 3mm is the perfect choice for riddling smaller baits such as pinkies but they are also handy for finer groundbaits or removing larger particles from dry groundbait.
3mm will riddle sawdust off your maggots. 4mm will riddle your casters out of your maggots and it you are using a groundbait with particles it will riddle that.
Basically you want the smallest mesh so your maggots don't go through. To get the dust off you could use a sieve!
Point to note DO NOT remove all of the sawdust or maize off your maggots or if you do put some fresh sawdust back in. It is that that stops them sweating and stinking off.
I used to riddle the sawdust off and then put fresh in. It keeps them fresh for longer and they smell 'clean'.
Working in a tackle shop I used to have to riddle and clean the maggots straight after delivery, and have always been fussy about my own bait as well.
I am positive clean fresh maggots catch more than smelly old bait.
The only exception is in winter when I actually want maggots that have used up most of the feed spot, they wriggle more in cold water.

I get most of my wrigglers online now but when I used to collect direct from the factory I'd actually order them completely uncleaned (so no maize or dust, just all the crap that they're farmed in). They were absolutely rank, proper stank. I found the dirtier/stinkier they were, the more effective they were. Imo you want them kicking out all that ammonia, it pulls the carp in.

+1 When i was in the match scene many years ago this is how i preferred it. Id take them in a bucket and riddle at the
side of the bank when setting up, especially if there was a baiting period allowed prior to fishing.
Now a days get them from my local shop prepared to save hassel but its a shop which is predominantly match focused so they always have great fresh maggot & casters.

Buy a proper one they are cheap enough. Also a great way of keeping them fresh is ensure the bucket is big enough so they dont sweat too much. Add weetabix I crumble 3 up to a couple of pints. Really takes any smell of them and shiny as anything.

Thanks for the replies and advice 👍
I'll get a 3mm ordered to riddle saw dust off before spodding out ( 1st time I've done it ) unless they're is something else I need to do

Porridge oats is what I used to use in my matchfishing days. Keeps the maggots clean and dry.

Yonny,
I think you, while absolutely right with what you say are getting fresh fresh maggots with added attraction of the meat or whatever they are bred on.
A tackle shop could not sell them like that, they need to be riddled and cleaned up, then sawdust put in them to prevent the ammonia stink.
Kind of stage 1, stage 2, then stage 3 if that makes sense. At home you don't want ammonia stinking maggots where they have started to sweat.
