Currently using Mini Big Pit Reels (Shim 5500) with 12ft 40mm Butt Ring Rods.
Would I see an increase in casting distance by trying a 50 mm setup?
Using 15lb Mono, which lets face it, is always twisted to an extent.

I'd be amazed if you see any increase in distance. Especially with 5500 sized reels.

Us a 12lb line with a shock leader will get you more distance that chageing to a bigger ring

I'd use 12lb line straight through, no shock leader. Don't like the idea of a knot on your line above your business end. No difference between a 40 or 50mm ring, I have 25mm ring on my 2lb tc Armalites.

I dont think you would see any at all by swapping guide sizes with those reels and 15lb line the distance drops off as the spool empties.

To most of us 50mm butt rings do not add any incease in distance and is a fashion, probably started by DF😖😆
50mm butt rings are also more likely to get broken. They may make a difference if you are casting world record distances, but not to most of us.
My Century SP's and NG's both had 40mm butt rings and with both of them, and Big Pits, either Shimano Aerlex 8000's and Beastmasters, I could get around 125metres. Even Big Bertha's spod has a 40mm butt ring and I can still get a medium Spomb to over 100metres with 15lb line (still using the Aerlex and a shockleader).
I used Shimano DL10000's with the NG's, and due to spool depth and 15lb, could not reach any further than 90metres. The spool was not long enough, and too deep, to cast any further.
