Looking at one of these as a mid layer on bike tours, will be worn as both casual evening wear over a shirt and on cold days on the bike over a merino base and gore-tex Pro top, obviously can't be to bulky so 800 fill power max, what's good?

Depends on your budget, I've a few different ones, cheap end Decathlon do some nice lightweight down jackets, not overly bulky but a good warmth to weight/price ratio, Uniqlo ultra light down gear is also good, I've hiked/ camped in winter in the highlands just using a Uniqlo ULD gilet and jacket over the top and been plenty warm enough.
If budget isn't a problem you can't beat PHD for what are probably the best in the world for custom down gear, just bear in mind the lighter the face material the more it's prone to damage.

“Goose” down any good?

I would look at a synthetic bodywarmer to go under your jacket mate, washable, thin and warm. Lots of variations about and I have about 3 lol, thinnest of the lot is an Acrterix one that I have, thin and warm, worth a look

Edit - it's the Atom vest I have, under clothing it is warm, over a top, not so much noticed, get draft under the arms etc

Cheers chaps, will look at all recommendations, not bothered about price as both my proshell jackets were well over a grand each yet the removable thermal liners aren't up to much. I've got heated jacket but want something when off the bike on walkabout. Hopefully will be going to the Arctic circle on tour as well.

RAB microlight sounds ideal, without the hood.

Good shout. I have had one for quite a few years, with a hood, down, one of the best jackets I have owned 10/10

I also have a Cirrus flex jacket, synthetic, cheap, breathable sides, warm and a good jacket for around £80

All depends what you can get under your over gear is suppose?

Rab microlite sounds good at should go under top coat no problem and 700 fill not bulky.
