Looking for a decent reel for under £100, would people recommend bait runners or big pit reels

This. No need for big pits on 10ft rods unless they're mainly for boating out rigs.

Absolutely agree, they're an excellent match to a 10' rod. They are about £50:each, or there's a freespool version for an extra £10 or so if you prefer a baitrunner. Cracking little reels.
Do a quick search on the forum and you'll find loads of positive reviews.

Having recently got my hands on a set after reading so many positive reviews I can also highly recommend them. I have them on 10ft rods and they are excellent reels, not just for the money they are genuinely good reels

If you use flurocarbon then big pits are a massive help.

Assume this is due to line memory? I don't fish fluro alot so have had minimal experience with it

Many will argue that bait runners are great for me big pits all day long bait runners imho are kiddies toys the largest are the linear X (baring the long casts and infinities etc). which I have a set of and I'm parting with them soon. Slightly larger spools are the Emblems and this is where 12-15-18 lb line can be used successfully. The linear x can coupe with 15, it's build quality is questionable it's a lovely reel longevity is questionable none the less the Shimano Long Cast is a superb reel as is the Diawa infinity:
