All depends on the size off fish in your water along with snags/weed you may need a bigger hook for strength but as a basic id say a size 6 should do the job

If you are using wafters or balanced baits match it to bait size.
Small dumbell wafters or 12mm wafters a size 8 works best. For 14mm wafters a size 6 balances nicely. You can always nip a little bit off to adjust. This works for me. I usually use small baits in bags. Sometimes go down to a 10.

It surely does. That's why I suggested matching the hook size to the type and size of bait. Simples

Matching as stated works but so does a oversize hook....very well, keep a open mind and keep in mind size of fish

Absolutely agree. Open mind is essential and at times I use big hooks for different reasons in different situations. However the size of the fish is largely irrelevant. You don't need big hooks to land big fish.

I've used sizes 10-4s the original Drennan Super Specialist size 8 was a go to and that was more in keeping with a size 10 or 12.

Looks like we're both on poke and hope when it comes to hook tying then.
A pair of reading glasses are one of my essential bits of kit nowadays.
Some of the lakes I fish state max size 6 or 8 so I normally size my bait around those sizes.

Definitely on the poke and hope which happens all the time. Unlike hope for a poke which doesn't. Due to bitter experience I take 3 pairs of reading glasses because otherwise I am really stuffed for tying rigs. It's amazing how lakes, rivers, ponds and beaches cause glasses to disappear, disintegrate or evaporate. This is not helped by the fact that line is thicker, hook eyes are smaller and everything but my hands shake.
