Uncle John got into fishing with his programs on Channel 4 back in the day, brilliant learning from the man by watching him and using his methods. I still watch go fishing on YouTube now, still brilliant.
I met a very high profile angler years ago at holiday venue in Devon, he was a friendly man, very well known in match circles and then specimen fishing. He told me about when he went to visit JW at his fishing shop in Norwich one day when he was in the area. He went and introduced himself to JW and was shocked when JW said he had never heard of him and was quite rude to the man!

Probably a bit harsh given he's not here to defend himself.
Bit of a disclaimer here, I knew John well, went on one of his guided trips and also guided him on one myself, 12 days just me and him somewhere off Africa. He outfished me 3 to 1 off the back of the same boat, same baits, same rigs, I'd fished 5 weeks there, it was his first day.
At the time he was very popular every time we went somewhere he was approached, 90 % of the time he was willing to talk to people, 10% caught him at a bad time.
I defy anyone, especially as we get older, to be nice to people 100% of the time, I struggle to be nice to my dog all the time, let alone total strangers
I'm sure he pulled plenty of stunts over the years to get that shot and that capture but I'm pretty sure he never re-hooked anything, maybe the odd use of a bucket for some of the rod bending shots but nothing like this.
Just leaves a bit of a sour taste when people start slating those who can't defend themselves and are probably responsible for more people fishing than anyone else.

I used to work with a bloke who was a close friend with him, used to write for trout fisher and did a bit of fishing with him, did the Nile perch thing too with him. Said he was an excellent angler and a lovely bloke so as you say, there is mixed feedback, and to be fair, I think we all fall out with a few or tell them straight along life's way lol
One thing for sure, it was a cracking set of mainstream TV fishing programs at the time with not a bit of bitterness or bull****, possibly an annoying laugh at times but just a man with a passion for the pastime which was clear to see for me

I dislike a lot of the general public nowadays mainly because they have no no manners and no respect for anyone but sometimes I can be nice and yes it's very easy to be caught on a bad day which everyone will remember rather than the good ones.

Agreed. Amazing how this thread, which is about purposely mistreating fish, hasn't had the same level of outrage as the OMC one, which was just about a piece of plastic that you can choose to use or not. I wonder why that is?

Exactly - I said basically the same on a Barbel forum, where a lot of people were defending MB. I asked if it would be the same if it had been Hamidi on camera talking about rehooking fish.
We know the answer to that...1,000 posts would have been reached in a day.

I think we all know that stroke pulling has been a big part of fishing for a long time. I think the difference now is that it appears to be getting a bit too desperate and out of hand. The only other real difference is social media exposure, to the world, that's everybody and their opinions!!!
Now if you stand on your soap box and tell the world how to do it you had better make sure it is perfect or you will get picked up on it or this case some **** house (rightly or wrongly, says a lot about that person, mate!) stabbed him in the back

As carp anglers we are probably the worst to talk about what is right or wrong in angling. Myles Gibson got voted carp angler of the year for illegally fishing and catching the tatton common. We glorify fishing where you're not allowed, ignoring landowners rules, ignoring lake rules, etc.

Not sure you had to meet him to see he wasn't the nicest of people at times, very easy to pick up in the old tv shows he had anger issues and was rather self interested, i particularly remember his treatment of a guide on one of the foreign trips, today's Woke wet wipes would of had him cancelled.
