Like most I have tried most things over the years, stop knots etc. I used insulation tape on the line for a long time, wrap it round, squeeze it on and cut it back, easy to remove too 
I have used the distance sticks, nothing ventured nothing gained for me. In the right circumstances I find them very good, especially when fishing to holes our clear sections in weed. I don't use a marker rod, just lead around, when I have found the spot, just clip up and count the number of wraps to the spot on the sticks
Do I use them all the time, no. I think anybody who has fished for a while is capable of hitting the spot or as close too it as required up to 100yds even in the dark, or I believe I can
I think they are better when session fishing. I seem to see most of the spodding gang using them, don't do a lot of this in my fishing 
Same as spodding though, you need to ensure your line is tight on your spools or you get the birds nests ffs

How does this all relate to people using poles to put bait out? You could be fishing at 6 sections with one manufacturer, which could be 8 from another?
