Does the book cover his time on Spinnaker, where he blanked, threw his toys out of the pram, then blatantly poached the Reserve in daylight, caught a carp, then was caught and kicked out of the club?

I was pissed off that wasn't in the book. Or the Korda situation/parting.
The book is highly autobiographical and to miss bits like that is criminal imo.

Ive got the wrong books, that no one wants to read. I have a complete works of Jim Gibbinson, including a number of 1st ed of Carp from 1969, one mint. No one want to read 'how to' books anymore, not when you can learn it from some kid with bumfluff on his chin on YT.

I know what you mean. There is a wealth of knowledge in those books though which goes way beyond YouTube, covering the stuff which really matters: understanding how carp feed, swim selection, weather observations and stealth. YouTube is generally just a big sales pitch for munga and bait boats!

I have a soft spot for 'Carp' by Jim G (a chap I know has a piece in there about the Cut). A fantastic book.
But it's not realistic to expect guys of today to obtain how-to info from books that are 50+ years old. Lets face it, our appreciation of such books is largely romantic and the info from these "kids with bumfluff" is more accessible, more relevant, and if we're truthful it's every bit as effective in terms of education. None of this new stuff would be possible without the work of the pioneers e.g. Jim G of course, but times move on.

Once enough knowledge is gained to kinda know what you're doing, the story style books are far more influential... Mentality, thought process, approach, watercraft, graft, style etc... Sometimes we must read between the lines but some of the answers can be gleaned from reading people like Jim... Experience cannot be taught... 👍

Funnily enough, I just couldn't get into Fine Lines. I would definitely rank Dave's books in descending order. That leather is dead by the way.
