True Jeff. A carbon or waterproof drag is of little use in reality but the 1 piece bail wires are a big improvement

Would never change from baitrunners myself, or Shimano for that matter.
Shimano Ci4 XTR-A LC Medium Baitrunners are my choice of reel.
I've always used Shimano, I remember buying 2 Aero GTE 8000's with one of my first ever pay packet at the age of 15 (some time ago now) and I absolutely loved them. I've still got them, though they do need a good service now.

I have a set of longcasts for my catfish rods, they are the only thing I'll use bait runners on these days. I feel front drag reels are way better for playing fish on

A few do yes, but I thought people were on about traditional rear drag rear bait runners reels.

Stopped using mine fairly recently, had baitrunners for 20+ years but I needed more cranking power on my syndicate ( shallow lake and they love to kite ) yes I could have got Big Baitrunners or similar but 90% of my fishing is snag fishing now where i am near enough locked up so just don't see the use / need for baitrunners anymore.
I and my friend also had the odd problem with baitrunners as well - when you have the baitrunner drag set really tight if sometimes interfered with the normal drag.
Had XTRB 10000 and switched for XTD5500 - which I will likely upgrade one day !
As IP says also - front drag is so much smoother and nicer to play on. I have some small baitrunners I use for Tench / Pike fishing still.

Going to get rid of some of my old baitrunners, will just keep a pair of 6000 gtes, despite servicing, the others still feel rough, guess the gears maybe just worn and tired.
But will be getting a pair of shimano oc's, for winter pike/barbel, much prefer the front drag.

Still have one 3500 Seaspin circa 88 left, which has been broken for the last 4 years, spool came off with the spindle attached, does anyone know if this is fixable?
Currently using 4000's x 2 circa 90/91 which somehow just keep going, have better reels but I just can't retire them, I do like a baitrunner.
