Even those 4 are only famous within fishing circles
Ask any joe bloggs on the street who they are and they more than likely wouldn't have a clue.
They would have more chance of naming a big brother winner or someone from the only was is Liverpool
I personally couldn't think of anything worse than being famous but I wouldn't mind the money lol

Define famous. Famous for doing something or self promotion?
Famous carp anglers? People who have made an statement in their era for me, head and shoulder above the rest or pioneers.
The hair, Wilton's bait theory, Richard Walkers catching Clarissa, Chris Yates the Bishop, Terry Hearn, Mary, that's a half decent start for me
Here's the problem for me, and like somebody mentioned below. Alan Scorthorne is probably the best angler on the planet. Man goes to lake, draws a random peg, fishes for a set time period and wins time and time again. I grew up in the area where these guys used to fish, Pickering, Denis White etc, etc and have fished against them in my youth and take my hat off to them because they are a completely different level to all around them. You do 40lb, they will do 50lb, it's reading the water and the fish in session and making the changes that makes all the difference
Let's talk carp angling. Man goes to a lake, catches a big fish, could be the first time he has fished it and had a bit of luck, could have been the 900th, he got it wrong but finally got his reward. Man puts picture in a magazine because he is proud of his capture and wants to share it with the carpworld. Man gets praise or man then gets slated because carpfishing is a very personal preference because what floats one mans boat, definitely sinks another. There's a debate in itself!
The reality is with carpfishing. There is no time frame, a man can sit there as long as he likes. The judgement is a picture, used to be lbs and oz. the problem is he can tell the world what he wants. And people often do
Look at carpfishing as a whole. And this is where all they hype and bull**** comes into it. 95% of people are ledgering 2 - 3oz out with a boiled bait on the end of it. The only real difference is the boiled bait and where you put it. Then you are waiting for a carp to be attracted to it, pick it up and eat it. Easy really ain't it
One of the biggest factors in carp fishing believe it or not is the carp, you have to sit around and wait for a carp to come along and eat your bait. It may not be in the area, it may not want to eat your bait when it does come over it but you need to be there for when it does and that is the difference. You need to be there.
Carpfishing is about producing pictures if you want fame (or you could self promote and talk bull**** but most decent folk can spot a bull****ter a mile away) and the only way you will consistently produce pictures is by sitting at a lake behind your carp fishing rods. It's as simple as that
So my advise. To be the Best most successful carp angler is, Jack your job in and live on the bank. Out all all the Best Most successful carp anglers i know dole wallers catch the most. Can't knock the self employed lads either, during quite spells they are at the lakes making the most of their opportunities, why not, they catch a lot of fish
Out of all the carp anglers I know anybody who is a working man, doing the family things and has a passion to pursue carp deserves as much respect as anybody because that is a tuff old frustrating thing knowing you could be catching fish instead of doing the baby sitting and shopping
If you want to be famous. Jack your job in and go and fish the circuit waters with the most wanted in
If you want “quick” fame go and fish the stock ponds
Choices for me
Either way though, if you Jack your job in, you still have to catch them
Only one thing I take from carpfishing and that is self pleasure. If a lot of others did the same I reckon it would be a much happier place, bring on social media and bragging rites and what a ****ing joke this pastime is becoming

I think the last numbers I saw there were estimated to be about two million anglers in the Uk. If you factor in say 50% of those are kids, people who go twice a year, match anglers, people who don't read magazines or use the internet etc etc. You are left with about a million people.
The population of the Uk is about 66 million. So what you are hoping to achieve is being well known in 1/66th of the population. Hardly fame is it. If you took a picture of Jim Shelley and knocked on every door in your town and asked them who it is, how many people do you think would have a clue? A couple maybe if you are lucky and he's infamous in carp fishing.
Thankfully I know you are only on the wind up.

From what I've seen working in the tackle industry isn't the worst way to earn a living, but it ruins your fishing as a hobby if you have a job that requires you to catch fish. It also means a lot of time away from home, which normally means your kids don't know who you are and the wife runs off with the milkman.
I think the last numbers I saw there were estimated to be about two million anglers in the Uk. If you factor in say 50% of those are kids, people who go twice a year, match anglers, people who don't read magazines or use the internet etc etc. You are left with about a million people.

Lets face it you mention those names to anyone that doesn't fish and they will look at you blankly so I would not even claim they where famous. I'm pretty sure their names don't come up in pub quiz.

John Wilson and Richard Walker.
Walker was known outside fishing as technical director of a grass cutting machinery company. I also think he was into Rabbits. He even has a blue plaque on his birthplace on Hitchin
John Wilson, the man who brought angling mainstream.
To us anglers we are only famous to our own group of peers, and to be honest, with the demise of most printed magazines I think there will be fewer 'famous' anglers.
