Fish should not be named. IMHO

I fished a syndicate lake where the bailiffs son had a name for every fish, If he saw you playing one (he was always at the lake ) he'd run round and grab your net, but before he'd even netted it ( gin clear water) he'd tell you it's name, weight and when last caught.

I hated that. I like to at least imagine there's some mystery left in carp fishing.

I have since joined 2 syndicates with pretty much no named fish, just the obvious big ones.

It's just human nature, a easy way of categorising something without going round the houses.
I get it for special fish, as in the old days, but with so many fish about nowadays maybe its lost a bit of purpose. As long as it make you happy and all that

I know that sort of person. I don't mind a chat while fishing and it doesn't necessarily have to be about fishing but what I hate is these walking encyclopedias who can only talk about nothing else other than dates, weights, places and history etc etc

Yeah totally agree, very boring.

I know what a name every bream i reel in,i call them Scozza,horrible slimy and don't put up much of a fight like him on the footie thread

if a name applies to the character of a fish - how it looks, it's behaviours - a bit of meaning etc then I am all for it - the big common, two tone, one eye, the fat one, the slag (every one's had her)

naming carp after people, relatives or people - all a bit boring & silly.

baing able to name a carp when it gets to a certain weight? LOL LOL LOL - why not go the whole hog, maybe some sort of religious naming ceremony with a carp priest & a bit of a piss up afterwards?
