I wasn't surprised, good luck for me, they'll be needing a good munch after all that and few bother putting bait in if they can't fish! Closed for 3 weeks, maybe extended if thet carry on into next week.
Not too sure I like the conditions re water keeping/deoxygenation, thunderstorms due and a drop in temp and from my dog walks the algae has a good headstart this year, thick bubbly rafts on some waters! Hopefully its too early in the year with a lower burden.

I think possibly because to me it doesn't feel like we've had a spring yet.

I make you right on that! We've had abysmal weather all “spring” and then within 3 days of it actually feeling like spring, they get their jiggy on lol

Funny thing is back in the 70's and 80's the carp almost always seemed to spawn near the of closed season or after the season had started.
I wonder if their habits appear to have changed due to the different strains that are common in our lakes now?

Sods law would always dictate that they would always spawn on our around the 16th June.
We would still fish for them mind. Anglers weren't so mortally blessed back then..
. We've waited three months to wet a line. We ain't going to let a bit of fish nookie get in the way of that.. 
The reason I started the thread is that I found it astonishing. That with the seasonally cold weather we have been having. Is that in the case of a lot of fisheries it took one or two days of higher than normal temps for the fish to get it on.
In years gone by I have found it normally takes a sustained length of good weather for the water to warm up enough so this can happen. Strange for me anyway

And in reply to your 2nd part of your post. I'm not sure it's anything to do with different strains. More to do with different Stockings. You will probably find fish that are stocked together will spawn together. Maybe something to do with age. This might be reason why a lot of lakes fish are spawning all over the place and at different times.

I guess partly as it never got that cold over the winter, so water didn't need to warm up as much. certainly the lakes I fish have been in double figures for a couple of months already.

Oh the different age groups is definitely a thing. I've fished lakes where if we stopped fishing every time some carp spawned the lake would be shut from May until the end of August.
Do you ever remember there being mortalities from the carp being angled for when they were spawning? I certainly don't.

I never understand why people are so proud that they pack up when fish start spawning, but they are happy to fish for them up to the very last second before they start splashing about. As if it's only if they get caught during the actual act of spawning that is stressful.

100% right. I'd rather a female were caught two days after spawning than two days before.

It's been a long, long time since Sparsholt but I remember carp beginning their second phase of spawning when the watter is 18°c. On the large water I've been fishing its definitely been that, in the shallows. In the deeper water its much lower. The result is the fish have spawned in the shallow water, in the sun and in the lea of the wind.
