Mark, I think it is venue specific on my two current venues one I use home made 15mm cork ball pop ups to good effect and dont feel the need to go smaller the other larger pit I fish 11 & 13mm PJPU's outfish larger hook baits (in my opinion/findings). Cant put my finger on why perhaps on the larger pit as had been said they have been hammered on larger baits or perhaps when particle/pellets were allowed (boilie only now)most food items were small which may condition the carp to look for smaller items?

Back to original post in my opinion you cannot get better pop ups than PJPU's for buoyancy an 11 or 13mm bait will hold up a large hook in deep water for days!!

Small hookbaits are the one if you're fishing over bits n pieces.
Over boilie I'd not bother with a small'n.

Up untill March time I will fish small 12mm wafters/ pop ups on my syndicate just because during the inter fishing over small bits like hemp and corn with boilie chops/ crumb seems to do a much better job for me

If I can look into the water as a human with human and clearly tell the difference, I reckon a fish with vision that has evolved under water for hundreds/thousands of years probably can.

I don't think the question is can they see it but does it actually mean anything to them what they are seeing?

Interesting thoughts on this and thanks for the replies...
So, if we think a fish can tell the difference on hook bait size what are our thoughts on using smaller hooks with say 11mm pop ups?

Looking too deep into it mate.
If a carp COULD tell the visual difference from bait to bait by 4mm, we would all be playing golf.

As a fish, they cannot see what they actually are picking up, or sampling. Hence Chemoreception.
The bigger the fish the bigger the 'blind spot' by the mouth, as their eyes are on the top of the head.

I've watched carp rotate on the spot in front of a bait to check it out
This blind spot is obviously there but this carp knew how to get around it 😂

Are you sure?
