Anyone here have a colostomy bag and can carry on fishing safely in relation to staying sterile please? Any information greatly appreciated.

Just out of interest have you posted about this a long time ago?
The reason being the use of a colostomy bag is ringing a bell, I'm sure someone posted about fishing with one. I've done a search but the thread might be older than the forum reboot.

Maybe not fishing related but simular in many ways. I worked with a fella who had a colostomy bag doing maintenance work which could at times get a bit dirty. He didnt seem to have a problem. I know he kept spares and clean clothes for the odd accident he did have. Put it this way it didn't seem to stop him leading a normal life. I hope everything works out OK for you Harvey

I know a girl with in your situation.she says keep your hand and the wound clean she has had a few accidents.but lead's a normal life. swimming. Badminton. Running.and so on. Take care and all the best.

Your welcome.. one thing me mate did say was that the worst thing about having a colostomy bag was finding the shoes to match...

My Daughter has one and though she doesn't fish does spend the odd night in a tent (festivals etc), she has a dedicated bag for supplies and keeps her stuff that needs to be sterile in this. Plenty of sterile wipes to keep the area clean, she struggled at first but 18 months down the line it has become second nature and she leads a pretty normal life.
Perhaps explain to your medical team about overnight fishing they may be able to advise if there is anything you need to consider. Medi-Link who deliver the supplies are very good also.

many moons ago I had a pick line from my chest & still did nights. it was a ballache at first but very quickly became part of the routine for keeping it clean etc - main things were that I just took more care of myself while I was out - took it much easier by giving myself more time for tasks like setting up / packing down etc - regularly changed clothes, kept the area clean with sterile wipes & as soon as I felt anything was off, I would head home to get it checked - only happened a couple of times when I caught it - climbing a tree & rolling over on my bedchair.
you know yourself & will know if there is anything wrong - doing everything you are told by medics will most likely make you feel restricted but they are always going to be overcautious & you will quickly realize your limitations & get a good balance. good luck mate

My wife has been an Ostomate for 14 years now, since major surgery for colorectal cancer (stage 2/3) - there is a wealth of help out there , especially from Colostomy UK (who just so happen to have a Rugby League team !)
It can be awkward at times , and accidents can and occasionally do , happen - but Pam has never let it stop her doing what she wants - she shops , she walks , she swims , she flies abroad on holiday . Virtually the same as before it became a case of "live with the bag , or die without it"
