Hi all,
I have recently started using a 10ft spod rod (ESP quickdraw) and have had issues with frap ups leading to crack offs. I believe it is the leader knot causing this but not 100%. The braid is left almost knotted to one of the guides at the point it breaks.
I've never suffered this on any spod rod in the past and I've used a few different rods over the years. I think it's possibly the thin/minima style guides that are causing this.
Has anyone experienced similar, and found a solution? Thinking I might need to go for 50lb straight through rather than my usual 20lb braid with a shockleader, but I do t really want to do this!

I experienced similar things when spodding when using 20lb braid with a 40lb braided leader, As I was only using a midi spomb at 25/26 wraps I when to 40bs braid straight through and eliminated crack offs immediately.

Really don't understand why some still use leaders these days.

Agree, and also use the Gardner spod braid. No need for ultra thin braid and leader unless you a fishing mega range. Under filling the spool compared to mono is also key.

Other than weight saving not sure why a dedicated SPM rod is specced with minima type guides - braid can wear grooves over time so not ideal. In terms of your leader to braid knot try and ensure its as compact as poss - you will always 'feel' it running through but it shouldnt necessarily be the cause of fraps unless your mainline is significantly thinner in diameter?

I'm not sure but I feel the distance of the butt ring from the reel is having an effect, especially if using a full sized spod reel with a full spool. I'm sure the speed of the cast could have an effect too.

Agree, they're unnecessary and obviously not well suited to a spod rod.
It's a fairly thick 50lb shockleader and thin 20lb braid. It's my normal shimano spod reel I've transferred from my 13ft distance set up.
I've got some 50lb whiplash so will try that straight through

I had exactly the same problem, even with 40lb braid straight through. I figured it was due to the small butt ring and the short distance between it and the reel. I think the braid struggles to quickly go through such a small opening causing it to frap up.

50lb whiplash is only 0.18. The Gardner spod braid, for example, is 0.30. You're less likely to to get wind knots and frapping with a thicker braid and 0.30 still casts miles.

Could be casting style / smoothness? I use a 10' CTX SPM for midrange marker and spod work but have a 50lb Arma Kord leader attached to 30lb Banana braid . . .you could argue the leader is superfluous but unless I'm giving it a massive whack generally I cant be arsed to use a finger stall so the thicker leader is fine (also takes the wear off the now discontinued spool braid)

I've temporarily gone back to my 13' fox X5 but I'm going to try 12lb nylon with a leader when I get round to loading it.

Seems to be a bit of a design flaw if you can't use a conventional spod reel/braid/shockleader set up with it.
