Hi all. What with the cold weather descending on us i was looking at ways of warming the bivvy up. I know the small portable gas camping heaters are an option but I really don't fancy a gas one in the bivvy (or am I being over cautious?)

My question, is anyone using or know of a good alternative, ie rechargeable battery ones? I know theirs some good power packs with solar panels on the market at the mo and you could use a small low wattage fan heater plugged into the power pack, trouble is some of the power packs aren't cheap and you'd need a top of the range one in order to get a few hours out of it before it needs recharging.

Any suggestions be much appreciated (oh and thermals, hot water bottles etc are ok but wanna take the boy and he feels the cold)

You should never run a gas stove or heater inside your bivvy. It's a well documented killer.

Dress appropriately, eat well, don't endanger yourself.

Bought me a Seven Oaks heater, i am going to do two 7-day night sessions in November/December

If I leave the door 3/4 open and the opposite window slightly open on my Frontier XD is this safe enough?

I'm terrified of Gas, last year a fisherman with us in Belgium died in his fishing van due to co-poisoning

After a long time of hesitation i now bought one and chose the Seven Oaks because of the Co2 and tip-over protection.

Gonne do 2x 7 night sessions in November/December

I had a black cat bivvy heater years ago but it was a waste of time as you need to have the door up to ensure you don't gas yourself. Personally you would be better with a heated blanket (Nash,Avid) or even the heated cushion that solar do. I find this to be brilliant. Amazing how warm you feel when sat on a heated cushion. Alternatively nothing wrong with a hot water bottle or two and you can get extra large ones off Amazon that are great.

Id never use one in my bivvy - but I love a winter bbq with a fire log (Buy from most supermarkets theyll last around 45 minutes) on top and ill happily sit outside until its time to retire

Ive also got a solo stove mesa which is a genius bit of kit and tend to use that camping butr principle is the same (think of a table top fire pit) google or you tube for reviews slighltly biugger than a pint pot - burns wood or pellets gives off no smoke and is small and compact both do the job adequately but not to be used in the bivvy

I don't use a gas heater, I'm too paranoid, but for all of yours safety, if you do decide to buy one please just buy a carbon monoxide detector.

I think you can buy them on Amazon for £13, plus some batteries.

We spend so much time spending enormous amounts of fishing equipment, so £13 isn't going to kill you, but the gas heater might.

I invested in some ZT Nash winter wear and the carp spirit thermal cover..
Can't feel the cold using that..
Ok a quick 5 min blast with your stove on helps before getting in the bed but apart from that nothing is really needed

Absolutely no need for a bivvy heater of ANY kind...
The availability of good thermal clothing, sleeping bags and covers, good food and hot drinks means that there is everything you need to sit out in winter.
If your kit isnt adequate then don't go, or if it turns dodgy then just go home.

As long as I stay under the sleeping bag everything is okay, but I hardly sleep at night when I go night fishing (max 1 hour), read a lot during the night or watch TV on the tablet, so then I don't lie completely under the sleeping bag, it is mainly for those moments that i was looking for extra warmth.

Is the Seven oaks heater so bad then? they are sold as the safest tent stove ever!

They say safer not safe. It has an oxygen depletion device but if your asleep or drop off will it let you no your being gassed out?

Just no need to ever take the risk, where sensible clothing good food as mentioned or go home. It's a hobby not a survival exercise.

I have had frozen water and frozen milk a few times.
I used to do sub zero nights under a 45" brolly with home made storm sides, on an argos lounger, a crappy thin g10 that had almost no feathers left, a wooly bear suit that the wind whistled through, rigger boots and 2 pairs of wooly socks.
A normal night is one hat, a COLD night is two hats... the extra layer makes a difference.
Bivvy heaters, pah... Kids these days
