Vital in certain circumstances where you want to help pin the line down . A hindrance with weed and undulating bottoms though

Like already mentioned below they can be a great edge in some circumstances, one of my syndicates I do catch a lot more when pinning my lines down out the way but other lakes I fish I would use them because of weed, gravel bars etc

I use them a lot, the ones you drop off the rod tip, not the flying ones. But only when the bottom is clear. Useful for all sorts of reasons - pinning your line down, avoiding swans & geese, easier to play fish.
I always buy the ones with a figure of 8 plastic connector, these are by far the best. All others I have used are prone to dropping off when winding in/playing a fish.
I always buy bright coloured ones as well in case I drop them in the grass, they are easier to find. They're that far away from your end tackle, colour doesn't matter.

Yup, I fish with them as a default now unless circumstances dictate otherwise - always know my rig is sat nicely on the bottom and when playing fish I don't have to worry about crossing over my lines.

Had all my rods trashed by geese the other night and was too tired to re do them. If I'd had back leads on they wouldn't have been an issue.

Only weed will stop me using backleads and I am obsessive about them.

Makes landing fish easier
Can help pin line down, even with bumps and bars
You can change the line angle to the spot with them
Disadvantages
They can hinder if you need to strike - but I haven't found this an issue with modern day rigs
Indication needs refining..
Basically I wanted the heaviest but lightest backlead that can be sent a good few yards out. One that comes up fairly easily and slides toward a hooked fish.

Wow, that's a bit of a weird contraption. Does that offer any advantage over a "standard" back lead? Does it ever tangle when it slides down to the business end?

The smallest Korda backleads work the best IMO - little Atomic pebble style ones can get caught up in large tip rings and sometimes fail to slide back down the line when playing fish making them a bit of a risk . . .

In my head yes in reality probably not.
The float helps counter balance the weight a bit, so on a take it come to surface quicker. It can't tangle due to the sponge and they slide really well. The sponge also gets pushed up against clip so they can't tangle on other lines as some of the clips can.
Lastly the float keeps the line a couple of inches from the bottom as I fish a fair few pits with sand stone and backleads has a knack of finding the cracks and dragging the line down with them. Massively over engineered but I like them!

Yes, looks like a few places for line to get caught! Sure they work though.
I've stopped using backleads pretty much since they caused me more issues than they solved. Lines can still cross - with the backleads themselves catching on the other lines when a fish is bolting around. Then it just descends into farce which sees all 3 rods needing redoing.
