On my last trip out, I caught 2 carp both hooked in the side of the mouth, Would this indicate the rig was to long.
I was fishing a wafter hookbait on a 7.5" IQ2 d rig, over spodded particle/boillies. Both runs were screamers, no bleeps before hand, other than a massive liner about 20mins before, which I guess was the fish eating the particles, as it was pooing it over the mat.

fish just feeding normally, and then moved off to the next food item to the left or right, and not up ending.

Your over thinking it Fella.. you've hooked a carp fair and square in the mouth. Your rigs working fine. They dont all get " Nailed " you know..

If the fish has ended up in the net I would say it's done it's job. I'll take any hook hold at any time it matters very little to me if it's side of the mouth or bang centre of the bottom lip. No need to over analyse rigs when your catching fish.

Just un hook it and re hook it in the middle and take a shot for the gram...

If it was hooked well enough to bring it in and wasn't foul/ double then that's all you can ask from a rig. If you are catching them don't change

Thanks for the comments, wasn't sure if using a slightly shorter hooklength whilst fishing over partices would be more beneficial?.
On a completely separate note (save making a separate thread),
Whilst walking round the lake yesterday, I noticed a very large pile of zebra mussels, think that's what they are, the smaller ones, on the bank behind some reeds, there where easily a couple of hundred shells, what would be eating them?.

As others have stated birds do eat Zebra mussels but I don't think they would return to one particular place to do so..
Might be a rat if the mussel beds are shallow, though they can dive deeper than one would expect. Sounds more like mink or even worse, Tarka.
The latter should be easy enough to confirm...look for spraint on bare areas, large stones, cut down tree stumps...anything prominent like that. They always leave something to mark territories and for the benefit of other otters.
