I'm about to have some custom made free spirit hi s's built and need to know what size tip rings to have fitted . To be honest I've thought of most things but haven't give this a second thought. The rods are free spirit hi s 12'6 3.25 in full cork with 50mm Kigan 3D in gunsmoke . My rod builder has asked if I'd like 12 or 16mm tip rings . Not really sure so looking for some advice , thanks .

Personally I would go with 16mm. On my Torrix I'm rung from 50mm to 16mm.

Thanks for that . Does anyone know if the Kigan tip rings are all anti frap or would I have to specify it , thanks ?

16mm if you have to have 50mm butt. I hate 50mm rings they look terrible. 40mm is more than big enough. Great choice of blank, probably the best alround rod ive ever owned and by far my favourite hi s blank. They are superb.

I'm in the minority here but if I were having those built it would be with a 40mm to 12mm advanced pattern ring set.

The only benefit I could think of for a large tip eye would be being able to pull a lead clip through if you're zig fishing?

Care to explain your point? Do you mean accuracy or distance? I would have thought smaller like 12mm would be more accurate. Can't see there being much difference in distance 12-20mm once the line has rattled though every other ring.

Likewise, I'd go for 12mm. My local rod builder would probably build these with 30mm down to 12mm and probably have 9 guides in total (incl butt and tip). Looks loads better than these rods with basketball hoops as guides.

Just something that Terry told us on a casting tuition years ago when he tried my AKN12H 2.75lb I took along he had never actually seen one at that time
he actually wanted to cancel the lesson that my pal had arranged due to a storm with 40 - 60mph cross winds !!!!
but as my pal had driven from Somerset he reluctantly agreed
I persuaded him to cast my Amorphous rod and due to the age of it he said Im not going to give it the biggun as I dont want to break it
he then cast 184 yards with the single cast and and that was with the gigantic bow in the line with the crosswind !!! as he said this rod is amazing very fast recovery speed it will easily do 200
but it really needs the tip ring changing to a 16mm !!!! for better range it makes a difference and I have never forgotten that

He could cast 180 yards with guides whipped on a storm pole
Razorback who used to post on here has rods with 25 or 30 to 8mm guides he regularly puts over 180.
What Terry usually says is that all his casting records have been with 50 to 16mm or bigger, not that a person of average ability would see a real benefit
