I agree. We have all become too reliant on "cheap" foreign imports, but at what costs? We went from being the workshop of the world after the advent of the industrial revolution to an economy where selling insurance seems to be our driving force. That may be a bit simplistic but our lack of producing goods is certainly evident when we didn't make any ventilators in this Country or struggling to produce enough PPE for the NHS. I know the outbreak of Corona Virus is something that practically no-one could have predicted but it has exposed the weaknesses. When China went into lockdown early in the year, many manufacturers in this Country went into reduced working as they relied on them to produce the nuts and bolts of machinery and we only assembled them over here.
Unfortunately there will be a massive global recession and unemployment will surge in the months and possibly years to come. I hope that responsible Companies will look beyond the bottom line and start to invest in this Country so we are better prepared to weather any storms on the horizon.
Will those at Korda, Nash and Fox etc. listen? They will if enough people ask them questions and boycott them if they refuse to act. The power for change is in our hands if enough people challenge the system that we have allowed to become the norm and put our own interests first, even if it does seem more expensive in the short term.

would imagine its almost impossible to compete with the factory style manufacture in china now, and financially impossible to make everything you require in this country and still compete with someone who still takes advantage of the global economy. It would take a lot of people to take a moral stand at the same time and that doesnt happen in business very often i would imagine.

Completely follow the sentiment in this thread. I have stopped buying anything Chinese from now on, having traded directly with the country in a big way in the past.

thing is a lot of the imported stuff is just crap that needs to be replaced every few years. now some want to replace every few years due to innovation and just cos they like shiny stuff, and that's fair enough.
but higher prices can mean lower cost if design and quality are superior. This is where I think there is still hope for British manufacture. Defiant, JAG, Dymag Tackle, Harrisons etc are examples of this. Proud to say I use gear from all these companies and it's outstanding.

Yes, I've been as guilty as the next person in buying as cheaply as possible. But you have to look at a balance sheet objectively. Yes, you can buy cheaply from China. But the other side is high unemployment and higher taxes for those working (or on a pension) to prop up those not working on unemployment benefit and the social unrest that is associated with it. Suddenly that "cheap" item doesn't seem quite so cheap after all. We've sleep walked into allowing the huge industrial juggernaut that is China to provide for us but it has flexed it's might with it's tangled web of corporate takeovers and debt management to ensure that the world dances to it's tune. I hope that the positive of this terrible virus is that people start to realise what the real cost of buying "cheap" really means.

yes, as long as they cut, form etc material then I'm happy. Just assembly less so. Testing no chance.
if you're going to make the agrument imported materials don't count then very little is made in China either.

Thing I find strange at the moment is the seeming complete lack of anger on a political level over where the virus came from.
I mean 9.11 the flames had hardly gone out and boom America was marching off to war with Bin Laden and anyone else who fancied it.
