Hello all,

It's been a long time since i posted about bait as due to life, my fishing time ( for rolling bait and also actual fishing) those previous years was drasticly reduced !

Now i have a lot of free time again but i have faced some issues !

Is it me or all the stuff for rolling is own bait are incredibly difficult to source and became more expensive ???

For my usual binder semo, maize, soya, birdfood, milk replacer, yeast powder and spices it's not a problem, they are easily available were i am (france) as i don't buy that in fishing shop.

But concerning fishmeals, all i can find now is LT fishmeal , predigested, krill and squid, it's everywere at a big price !

Were are the good old Sardine/anchovy fishmeal, herring meal, etc.... I had far better results with those than the classic LT94, cpsp90 and krill meal combo that every bait manufacturer seem to use now !

Same for some additive, i see that mainline , nash, ccMoore don't sell their attractor and flavours anymore ? It's a shame as there was 1 or 2 killer carp attractor in all that, but now unavailable ???

Were do you source your ingrediants now for all the home rollers if there is some anymore?

You're not wrong, I'm of the same opinion after a 12-13 year lay off .
Fshmeals have become more expensive and certain ingredients have been harder to source. There are fewer sellers and carp tax is high
It's not just fishmeals though, prices are high for many protein sources in smaller amounts.

I've used AA baits for the bulk meals this time, a few bits from CC Moore but moons ago I would get 25kg from Premier, 25kg from QB, CCMoore etc.

In the past I've had no issues using sardine and anchovy, tuna, trout/salmon.
They were cheap as chips until the bait roller cut costs and made them more popular.
Might have mattered (to me) a decade ago but not any more.
LT94 and pre-digested are or were in short supply back in March when I was puttig together my ingredients. so I opted for herring and salmon meal,

Good clean squid meal was also so much cheaper., wouldn't touch the squid liver meal that was going about then, all beaks and bits of plastic.

Agreed, AA Baits are good and have all the old school fishmeals you mentioned in stock.

As for the liquid attractors, Johnson Ross is worth a look, certainly for Mainline home rolling (activators). They are the exclusive UK retailer of these products now I believe.
Not sure if they have any tie ins with any other bait companies, but worth a look.

Provimi 66 is still around, various suppliers.
Bacarel soluble shrimp extract [ I'm using it at 50ml per 6 eggs ]
J.Baker Ala-salar at 5 drops

Do you really need anything else?

As Mark said, Provimi 66 is still available (also known as Pelagia). 'Irish' fishmeal from AA baits is very good.

Look on Alibaba. You can get far better quality & a far greater variety of fishmeals in Asia than you can in the UK.

If you want the very best, look at fishmeals used to feed high value stock like Shrimp & Salmon. Shrimp meal in the UK is incredibly low grade, made from heads & shells. Squid meal often similar. Lowest grade.

I've got samples of new fishmeals in front of me now. Some are far more expensive than what's available in the UK. But the protein content exceeds 75% & the quality is off the charts. Blows away anything you will see in the UK apart from Pre Digested.

Alibaba is your friend.

Can you order on Alibaba as a private individual?

Yes. It is up to the individual seller. We have had only one seller based in Italy ask if we were a company or private buyer. As they do not supply private buyers.

But every Chinese seller we have purchased stuff from have not even asked. They take PayPal so you are completely covered. Just make sure you pay on the actual Alibaba site (not off site) as some will ask you to. Samples are no problem for most.

No different to Amazon or eBay really. The stuff is incredibly cheap. It's the import duties etc that bump the costs up.

Some sellers might sell a minimum of one tonne. Others it will be a minimum of 1kg. All is stated on the listings. Chat to the sellers, they will give you a quote for exactly what you need including delivery. Make sure you ask them to include all import duties and for door to door delivery. Otherwise some will only ship to your nations port & you would be expected to arrange delivery in your country. Just make sure you ask to include door to door delivery + all import fees. They all speak English (translators).

I know all those fishmeal mate, i have tried them all extensivly trust me !

I don't say provimi, LT94, pre-digested, krill etc... are bad ; sure they all catch fish ! And plenty !

But i have my reasons to use the good old sardine and anchovy, i have done many test on different water here in France and also in belgium and there is something to it...

In fact it is viewed as a poor fishmeal as it was not dried at low temp, or the protein content was on the low end of the fishmeals but... i had too much coincidence with it on different water to be just coincidence

I will try alibaba, they send in France no problem

You posted the exact same question on here almost 5 years ago Lol. So I'm guessing that if you haven't found it yet, then you never will. The product you seek has probably gone the same way as LO 30, Original CSL, Original Scopex, etc, etc. Just use whatever is available to you. It's not as though anyone has stopped catching because product X or Y has been discontinued. Like many of us, you're probably on a nostalgia trip but time marches on and things change.

Your right ! And at that Time, some lads helped me to find it !

I can catch on a lot of things, sweetcorn is cheap and available everywhere ! But pre-baiting with it in the hope of selecting the biggers resident from a water is just a waste of time !

Your right a lot of goodies have gone, but for this particular fishmeal, i know it's available somewhere, the fishmeal plant from Morroco, peruvian, chilean haven't stopped working ! of that i m sure

You're right, I've always had better results with the sardine and anchovy fish meal than with the others.

When I suggested using what is available, I meant fishmeal not sweetcorn. I honestly can't see that substituting one fishmeal for another within a mix is going to be the deciding factor. If your most recent suppliers no longer stock it then it may well be discontinued. Even though the processing plants you mention still operate, it may be that regulations have changed meaning that particular products have had to be withdrawn. I remember using sardine and anchovy around twenty years ago from Quality Baits. It was a decent bait with other fishmeals, milks, birdfood, Robin Red etc. My best bait of recent years though has been a predominantly nut and bird food bait containing only about 6 % fishmeal. Anyway, good luck with your quest.

I had a quick look for you. Could not find sardine & anchovy. Lots of anchovy meal on there though. They do samples. 25kg minimum this seller.

Same seller does a lot of other meals. 25kg minimums on all. Quite a lot of stuff that you see in the UK all gets imported from abroad by the tonne anyway.

Sardines are just young Herrings anyway mate. They are the exact same thing. Sardines are the name given to any young fish in the Herring family of oily sea fish.

It's the very high natural oil content in them that makes them so attractive to carp/pike. The specific reason that I hydrolyse Sardines & Mackerel. Oily fish.

Good find

I used herring meal in my latest mixes as AA didn't have any LT94

Those links look good although I think a 25kg bag would be wasted on me as it would about 4-5 years to use it all

I never knew until I was told don't worry

I found out off TackleBox Gary, they sell a lot of dead baits in the shop. Apparently there is no such fish as a Sardine in reality. It's just that general name given to any small/juvenile fish from the Herring family.

And just to confuse everyone further, when a sardine grows up it can be called a pilchard. For hundreds of years, biologists have been painstakingly classifying planet Earth's fauna and flora just so that we can call things what the Hell we want Lol. This was highlighted recently on the news, with fish and chip shops flogging Asian catfish as cod or haddock. Blooming rascals !

Well I never...

I never knew all this sardine/herring naming either.

I've had my finger hovering over some bits on Aliexpress/baba a few times. I'd never considered fishmeals though. There are so many other far out interesting and different ingredients on there for sure.

I had wondered how legit some of it might be.... some of the order units being in kilometers and being sourced from Sardinia etc
