Hi Guys,
I have Aero Tech's 12000XTBs, which I love and am looking for another set of reels to go on my lighter set up. Has anyone had both the ISOs and the Ci4 XTBs and which did they prefer and why? I imagine the Shimano's will be smoother? Also I couldn't find the weights for the ISOs if anyone has them, the Ci414000 are 560gms

fiend of mine had the iso,s and they went noisy and wobbly within 6 months and he got rid.Funny how when he first got them he claimed they pished over the shims .If you want a proper reel you know what to do if you want a blingy coffegrinder follow the sheep and buy the diawa

The old Shimano Daiwa debate....For balance I've had 2 sets of Infinity Brs, the 1st set over 10 years old before I sold, and my present set over 10 years old. I think it's the lack of tight tolerance that makes them so bullet proof. I do like Shimano's though I use the Stradic FG or FK for lure/spinning and they are very good.
Oh, I wasn't a sheep btw, if I was I'd of bought Tournaments way back when and on getting my second set I'd of bought Baisa, actually maybe not, I like a bait runner

For what it's worth, I have a set or four original ISOs and a set of four Ultegra Ci4 14000 XTA's. They both get used on different sets of rods. I have had no issues with the ISOs in 12+ years of using them and I think they are fantastic reels. Also no issues with the Ultegras but not used them for quite as long. I prefer the straightforward drag cap on the ISO to the bait runner style cap on the Ultegras but prefer the slower clutch adjustment on the Ultegras to the QD clutch on the ISOs. The ISOs are a very slightly smaller reel and I would say the also feel a little lighter than the Ultegras. The Ultegras are slightly smoother and the spool is a little bigger (mine take 600 yards of 12lb mono). I happily use both but if I had to choose between them I would go for the ISO's as I prefer the size and looks and find them slightly more user friendly. The Ultegras seem a little overgunned (to me) for smaller/medium sized lakes. The Ultegras are still really nice reels though and I suspect there is not a whole lot of difference between them and your Techs in terms of how they feel. Hope that helps👍

Mine are the 5500's. The only difference to the 5000's is the spool is slightly deeper on the 5500. They are basically the same reel with just a small difference on spool depth.

Why on earth would you want 14000's on a lighter set up ? Would have thought a set of technium' 1200's would be enough big pit reels and going for a lighter setup would be going for something like ultegra 5500's with a nice set of players rods.

Personally prefer a 14000/12000 size reel, lighter set up in this case being 12' 3lb-3.25. 5500 size more scope/10 foot rod size for me personally. Plus Shimano are physically smaller reels than the equivalent Daiwa, excepting the ISO which perhaps is between the 5500 and 14000 size wise, therefore a good compromise.

Sorry to hijack.. anyone know what the model name/number is of the Ultegra Ci4s from about 10/12 years ago that were midnight blue colour, with a non-folding silver handle?

Agree, although I've been carp fishing for 40 years. Anything less than 3lb (perhaps 2.75 at a push) is undergunning on the waters I fish which are typically snaggy/weedy and the bites are hard won, so the fish need to end up safely in the net. I have original 2lb Armalites but put simply fish are bigger and waters are weedier than back when I used them. I'm certainly not on my own to hold this view, even among my generation, but all personal preference anyway, each to their own. 👍😀

I'm not sure the last part of my comment came across right there, was rushing between shopping....the 'there in lies the problem' was me tying into my previous comment re the trend for the hyping of high tc rods to new comers to Carp fishing, defo wasn't having a dig at you

It's ok, i didn't take it that way and agreed 😀 Whilst I certainly use higher t.c than years back I fail to see a typical genuine use case (excepting perhaps really extreme range) for a 4lb t.c carp rod, certainly some marketing going on and no doubt they will sell a few!

Daiwa over shimano for me every time. For me the original iso is the best carp reel ever made. I had 5 of them for years and none of them ever had a single problem. They felt as good as the day i got them after years of abuse. Im a member of the shimano tech mgs group on face book and the new mags get slated all with the same problem.

Thanks good to know. Of all the Daiwa reels, ISOs seem the most revered which is why I'm considering a very good second hand set. New Mags, like many of the newer reels don't have the best rep.

I've had the original ISO's. The daiwa basia 20 SCW is the new all round best reel daiwa has made imo and should be considered if budget allows

Lovely looking reels those basia 20's and if my rods were not 2.5tc i would definitely get a set but my castizm's are a perfect match for my 2.5tc graph's. Incidentally the castizm are my second favourite reel of all time.

The 20's are not a patch on the castizm,i have owned them and got rid pretty quickly.They just didn't feel well made at all.I love my castizms though on my 10ft set up

Last mags i had were the xtb's, never had a shimano reel since but did buy a couple of little 4000 shimano vanquishes a few months ago as got them for a steal and they are something special.

I have a set of original ISO's and cannot fault them. Never missed a beat even though only serviced once in 20 years! I now have them on my 12ft 2.5lb daiwa whiskers
I had a set of 14000XTB's which I sold. Recently bought a set of Basia 45's. Thought about the 14000XTD's, but the super slow oscillation would do my head in trying to line up handles and spool out/in!!!

I've had most of the basia's and the all black 19 version is the best of the bunch by a mile.The 20 felt flimsy and for the price tag felt cheap,It's just my opinion and if you like them then fair play I didn't and sold them on pretty quickly

Ive only ever owned one set of basias and that was the original basiairs and they also felt flimsy and felt like i would break them.

I had the original technium' 10k's and bought the original basis the day they came out but took them back three days later as one had sized up and the other two were grating and hard to turn. This was caused by me setting up with them about ten inches off the ground on a sand pit and when it rained sand got into them. Got my money back and have had a few sets of reels since Inc Tec mgs,iso etc but recently sold off most of my carp gear and only kept a pair of original 20k's and a pair of chimera's. Been considering a light set of rods and reels for the rovers and small estate lakes but nothing modern interests me except maybe the 11ft torrix .

I have an original set of the ISO's superb reel and I think personally the best reel Daiwa have made, still got a set of the original Basia again think they are great, had the Basiar didn't get on with them felt cheap! Had the Shimano Black mags again not for me i also have a set of the 10000XT original Blue ones and these are superb also use these the most as on my 13ft rods, I think a lot of the original reels where better made, if I had to pick one the ISO's just edge's it 👍

Bail arms are single, solid bits of thin metal which felt really flimsy to me. Some daiwa reels have hollow bail arms which are much stronger. I'm surprised these they don't have them. Feel good to me otherwise
