Off to France soon. 18 acre lake 9 swims. 4 double. 5 single. 6 of the party have decided to pair up with no discussion about who doubles up and want to pick 3 of the double pegs first. It's slightly complicated by the fact one of the pairs are hubby and wife.

I asked if we're drawing... no. Double pegs being drawn first. I said that's a stitch up. We've all paid the same money and should have an equal chance of a peg as the 2 single anglers have 30% less choice. Nope. Double pegs drawn first. Pointed out they are choosing to pair up and don't have to do that.

I then say, as my Mrs is coming, I'd like to go in the draw for a double peg, as we could do with the space. Nope. She's not fishing and the double pegs are for 6 rods. I said red herring... We've all paid the same money to fish and could still end up with a double peg, in any event.

I'm now seen as being arsey as I've said I don't think it's fair. Not sure why you you would want to double up and leave large areas of the lake free for the fish to drift into. Am I being unreasonable?

IMHO this sort of thing should have been discussed before booking, they shouldn't just assume they get any sort of priority.

First thought - Are the single swims bad swims then and don't produce?

Second thought - just go and have a good week on the bank with your Mrs as company.

Final thought - book your own thing next year rather than being part of a group

Best way ive seen this sorted was ....
With the pairs having priority pick, that means they cant move swims.
The singles then have the run of the rest of the lake, can fish diff swims in day to night etc etc
From a fish catching perspective could well work in your favour.

It's a holiday, don't stress about things that haven't happened yet. All the double swims could be duffers that week and you could end up with all the fish in front of you.

So there are 3 pairs = 6
and 2 singles

So 8 people going.

I would say you pair with the other single and just draw the 4 double swims. Have a separate coin toss between each pair and winner can move into a single peg if they wanted to first if not the other person could decide to.

8 people - 4 pairs everyone with an equal chance of any of the swims.

Take 6 rods and have your Mrs down as an angler if you've all paid the same money. Don't have to fish them all.

My take is all 8 go in the draw as singles, all draw a number and take picks, if No1 picks a double swim and wants to double up with the person with second choice, the next pick goes to 3rd etc.

If it ends up with 2 people who want to pair up at the end with no double swims they'll either have to lump it and fish on their own or double up in a single and fish 2 rods each.

They'll have probably found out that a number of those Double swims are almost Bankers or produce a higher percentage of the bites every week.

If the Lake rules state that a draw takes place for swims than you should have a draw. That is the fairest way.

I would def not go with the same group again.

He older you get the more you have to take situations like this and understand the opposing point of view. It took me a long time to learn this but it helps.

I don't know the ins and outs but let's just say that 8 anglers paid £500.00 each to hire the lake. They would say that someone who has paid only £500 should have the chance to take a £1000 swim - they would say that's selfish.

Unless non fishing partners pay the same taking the wife matters not.

Personally I would roll over as if there is animosity before you even go it's not really gonna be the greatest holiday. You should be gathering for beers, genuinely happy for others captures and what we do on a lake exclusive we have is to reverse the draw on Wednesday so if one swim is doing all the fish everyone gets a better chance.

Everyone wants the biggest or most fish, but it's a holiday, the trip home if you've all done OK, had a laugh is so much sweeter than 5 people blanking and the rest waxing lyrical about thier super skills. It's a holiday.

I had this at Bossard, nothing mentioned beforehand either. All those doubling up drew first, was not happy about this at all!
Definitely wouldn't go back there either.
Had a choice of 3 swims. All should go in the draw, everyone has the same choice.

After thinking about what you have said a little more. Some of it I don't get. You don't seem happy they have paired up without talking to you?

But you are with your Mrs. So was you going to let her sleep in another bivvy?
You've not said how many single anglers are going?
So if you are the only single angler you have the best choice of pegs.

Infact other than the they draw first I'm not sure what your point is.

Care to explain a little more to us. Like how many anglers are going in total.

The thought of this sort of crap entering your mind before you go on holiday is simply not needed, I fear the seed is sown now though.

I've said this before on here, one of the reasons I've never fished that sort of venue, drawing for swims, not for me. Grafted hard all year, paid good money, then your chances are decided like Russian roulette...wth, try explaining that to any sane person, I just got 'that' look when I did a long time ago

8 anglers. 6 are doubling up, but there are 9 swims. One of the double-uppers is a husband and wife, which is the complicating factor. My grumble is those choosing to double up are first in the draw. The 2 of us fishing alone are effectively 4th and last in the draw.

My point is they are choosing to double up, they don't have to and this disadvantages the 2 of us fishing on our own. We all paid the same money, so we should all have an equal opportunity in the draw.

My wife not fishing is irrelevant to the draw as there is a peg for every angler.

My view is there should be a draw and if anyone wants to invite someone to join them, that's fine. But that person then drops out of the draw. Much fairer IMO.

So they've got a pick of 4 double swims and end up occupying 3 of them leaving one of those going into the draw between you and another so you both have 6 swims to choose from even if your second choice of the single anglers you have a pick of 5 swims, sounds to me like you get a better deal per say as they choose between four swims and worst case you get a pick of 5, are you friends with these anglers? I've been to France on socials with mates many many times for years I personally couldn't give a monkeys as I treat it like a holiday every time catching a few is a bonus in fact even if we have draws at some venues I dont pick I'll opt to go last and take whats going especially if theres a few that might be going for the first time or haven't done much in France before, I get a buzz watching or helping them catch, on many occasions that's worked out for me as well winding in spending most of the day enjoying the break.
Nothings guaranteed if you were first out and had top pick or whats deemed to be the going swim theres nothing to say you'll do any good in it.
Go have fun wind the rods in have some good food and beer chew the fat if you catch a hat full or a few cest la vie.

That was what I was actually thinking myself, I can't see why they'd argue with that.

@carpstar40, that's a lovely attitude to have, credit to you

We used to go as three anglers and if 1 of us was struggling there was always a unwritten rule that we'd swap swims or fish alternate runs if they cared to join whoever. Over the years it's become more about the whole experience rather than a fishing holiday, I do feel that I missed the 'bigger picture' when younger, fishing hard, but I guess a lot of us getting to a certain age have done that.

It may be me or you're not explaining this very well.

If they are paired up they get one draw for the pair in one of four double pegs. Why are you saying they get two draws. They are either paired up or are single. They can't have it both ways.

If they are all going to draw they are single and fishing separately. So tell them you want a pre draw it all are fishing single. Put one to eight in the hat everyone draws a number. That then says you draw 1st 5th or last.

You need to clarify are they fishing as a pair in the same peg or individual pegs. If individual pegs they ain't a pair.

Each double swim should be treated as 2 singles and all swims should go into a hat and be drawn as singles.

Once everyone has a swim allocated there is no reason why anglers can't mutually agree to swap swims if they want to be with buddy.

You all paid the same money, so it's out of order what they are dictating.

I'm with Carpstar on this. If the other's didn't double up you could be in a situation where you're 8th in the draw and only have 2 swims to pick from! Just go, have a great time and feel a bit smug if the swim you end up in turns out to be the lucky one!
