I have just been scrolling through some posts, and not wanting to sound like I'm having a go, i thoughts id start a new thread.
Now I'm as bad as anyone for having the same 3 rods reels etc all looking good on the rod pod. (I'm not bothered about handles lining up), small water set up, general set up and long range set up .....
Why do we feel the need to have everything matching, like most it was my father who got me into fishing and taught me so much, he's 78 now and doesn't go fishing anymore, and i have all his tackle in the attic. However i dont think he has 2 rods that match, i know there are a few Mitchell 300 reels up there but only cos these where his favourite reels...when he bought tackle it was for a specific function, but he would not use alarms and preferred swing tips when ledgering, but each rod he used was generally paired up with a different reel,
If he was fishing a commercial today, i think everyone would think he was the worsel gummage of the fishing world, not that he'd care ....his favorite saying was the fish are only interseted in the bit in the water, they dont know you've got the most expensive gear money can buy.....

Did he ever fish 2 or 3 rods for the same species in the same manner?
Probably not. I think that's what started the matching trend.
For years I would float fish/quivertip ,Swingtip to hand
Different rod and reel for each. And then work a bolt rig on an alarm
I only started matching when I got too lazy to hold a rod lol.

My mate got me carp fishing properly and matching rods and reels in carp fishing is all I've ever known in about 20 years of (sporadic) carping. Looks neater plus if you're casting to the same spot with multiple rods, you know roughly how you're to cast said rods. If you've got 3 differing setups casting style, leads, line etc will all act differently. Makes it easier in this sense too I suppose.

Getting 3 rods on a spot tight with matching gear is hard imagine using different rods and reels for each rod I used to do the same on match type but for how I fish now I have different setups of multiples to do the same as each other for a reason too....

Iv got a set of Terry Hearn classics that have sat under the stairs since I brought them as I can't bring myself to use them with basias just wouldn't feel right lol
As for different set ups iv got a set of 12ft hi-s, the hearns, 9ft quickdraws with oynx reels, pair of nash 10fts with reels and a pair of 6fts with reels and iv not had a bite for 25 nights 😂

Im so glad Im from an age were its function over fashion and all about how good something works and sod all to do with how it looks
I often see people talk about kit like alarms for instance and say oh they are ugly
and I think EH
your buying it to tell you when you got a bite not to sit and admire the thing ?
I know we are all different but I am only interested in how well it works dont give a toss what it looks like
I feel really sorry for the poor sods today that think they must follow the fashion
seems like they have been brain washed by tackle company's
but its your money to spend on what you like of course

I absolutely love it and for me it's part of the enjoyment. Has been for over 45 years from two rods (tricast and 410s) through to today.
I collect set ups that I put together for different scenarios, I even have the obligatory been through the wars set up that I can use on park lakes etc.
From a personal taste point of view I don't like gimmicks that serve no purpose, coloured reel handles and swirly bobbins. But as for matching set ups, sat at the same height looking good I'm all in.
I don't think anything else in life is different golfers, interior designers will match up when in theory two completely different wardrobes may be more functional.
I do it for me and love it - I don't sneer at others but now I am lucky enough to be able to afford the gear I want - oh and how anyone thinks they have a chance of a bite when the bobbins aren't level must be bonkers...

I have 3 10 foot Nash Scopes with Shimano Medium Baitrunners and 2 10 foot Nash Dwarfs with Sonik Reels for spod/marker work.
Thats my setup for every lake, even France. If i need extra distance, I use my boat.
And i have 1 Barbel rod.
Simples.

I remember building my first pair of carp rods. Intrepid Sealey blanks, one built with green whipping and the other with brown. I didn't want them exactly the same.
Like Gerry I really couldn't care less what my gear/setup looks like. It does get a few laughs when I have my rods sat on banksticks set at different levels, for different purposes, at the same time.

I have 2 Harrison torrix custom cork handles 10' and 2 basia QD's customs(and actually customised as well)I don't fish massive waters so this suits me and I always wanted a pair of basia's.
My second set up is my travel one 2 x nash dwarf and diawa whisker tournaments ss1600 so I can travel light but they are going to be serviced around Christmas by F&F and maybe customised too

I'm like your mate.
I have one very nice posh rod. I also have a selection of less expensive rods and I'll mix it up happily. If you're posting photos of your rods, you're not catching much are you?
To be fair, if I'm fishing more than one rod, I'll be using different tactics and there'll always be one in the near margins so different rods for different jobs if that makes people happier.

As said below, if its all the same, it performs all the same, so no need to get used to different gear. Its hard enough going from a heavier spomb rod to light fishi g tods, lat alone doing it for every rod.
And i like how my set up looks. And thats whats most important. No one is being hurt by it.

There is a huge number of anglers on the bank who are far more concerned about how their gear looks rather than how it performs. Like having their rods level, reel handles folded, trendy short rods etc etc. Its a massive case of fashion over function.
Why have you got your handles folded when you are fishing tight to a weedbed and its going to slow you down getting in control of your rods when you get a take? Fashion.
Why are you using 9ft broom handle rods in a sutuation where 12 ft rods would be far better and you're wondering why you are bumping off 20lbers, then blaming your rigs? Fashion.
Why are you wearing bright white summer trainers with zero weather proofing in the middle of winter when its caked in mud everywhere and now your feed are cold and wet? Fashion.
The list goes on

I don't do any social media so I fish for myself but I work full time dont live with my partner as I help look after an elderly parent so if I like the look of something and it has a use then I will buy it,I dont own loads of different set ups just what I need but it's not tat,that's why my fishing gear last for ages I get value out of my stuff.

The best anglers I know have the scruffiest hotch potch kit. Most of it good quality but used and abused.
If you have the time and inclination for perfectly matching spotlessly clean kit then you're doing it wrong.

One of my relatives only uses hand me downs. His spools are half full of old wiry line and his seat box is just a mess (coarse fisher)
But I've never seen anyone out do him on a days fishing

I put myself in the bang average category; however its my passion and I look after my kit so my OCD requires quality gear, set up and and presented in a quality way . . .this may not catch me any more fish but it makes me happy!
There is no excuse for random spool positions / handles being all over the place / indicators not lining up / unlevel rods / untidy bivvies and swims; attention to detail in all things is a mindset and therefore an edge . . .!!!

It's the shiny chrome, anodised tarty kit on lakes with manicured swims without a spot of mud that I don't understand. it's an outdoor pursuit after all, and if people are too worried about getting their kit dirty then they're most likely missing opportunities to catch carp.

I've seen some god awful set ups used by anglers that catch loads of fish, I never for one minute think it's because they have god awful set ups. If I am gonna look at something for hours and hours I would prefer it looked nice and neat that an absolute bomb site. Not at all worried about mud and the usual stuff but I take real pride as well as functionality very seriously and don't think there are any compromises to have it looking good, smart and neat set up.... It doesn't need to be expensive kit,

im a bang average angler at best ..... but i do like a matching 3 rod set up, i do like it to be in good condition and I do like it to all sit level when possible, and I hate fishing in chaos with stuff scattered everywhere.
I have multiple set ups for carp/specimen fishing from 1.25lb thru to 3.25lb in various lengths with various reels, multiple pods, multiple alarms, even multiple bivvies
... amonst it all is my first ever matching set up rods (Shimano) that i bought back in the 80s ... still used today.
Its satisfying to know I am happy with the kit i have and can cover most coarse fishing situations without having to invest further.

Quality gear still needs looking after, and if you dont look after it to keep it in tip top condition, you either have too much money, or your more concerned with, what you percieve to be looking like you know what you are doing, to other people who think the same.
My set up is always level, and i have top end gear. Which does get covered in mud, and the reels (basias that are apparently fragile and break by looking at them) are regularly submerged in silty water, and covered in sandy dirt every time it rains. But i rinse them off with fresh water when i get home, and this is why they last
I could leave them dirty, then i could join the people that complain cause their gear isnt up to it and breaks. But at least then id look like i know what im doing in the eyes of some people
Or i could pop down argos, get a load of tat, and be one of the best anglers in the country

Echo that, I have upgraded my gear a few times now over the last years and tend to look after it more nowadays since it has become more expensive. I buy gear on practicality purpose, to do a job, not to follow trends. I know people who change their gear more than than their underpants, bashing the credit cards too, madness!

I'm always debating wether to collapse the toilet or not last.
When I get home the only care I take is to dry stuff if wet.
I will get a bivvy out. Or open a rod bag etc.

I have 3 set ups...
2 x perch rods 1lb TC at 6ft
2 x 2lb 8ft light carp rods for ( pig puddles and chub on streams etc..)
3 x 3lb 10ft scopes for proper carping
All with matching reels..
Just helps to have rods to cover all situations I come across
