I Started to look back over the time I've been Carp fishing, and this caused me to realise I had lost touch with so many people I once saw on almost weekly basis in some cases.
I thought maybe I should start a list,
maybe some will also remember those people, and even add a few of their own.
some may even be here, a few might wish to remain hidden
Dave Thorpe.
Dave Plummer. had the little corner tackle shop in Norwich.
I think he moved to the USA.
Chris Turnbull. I fished a little water with Chris way back, we ran out of sugar and kept putting hutchies sweetner in our tea, Chris claimed after a week he was developing quit nice boobs. I now have Chris's contact details, he's not far away, I will make the effort to contact him.
John Bailey was there too but he never spoke much to me, Chris said he was fixated on just one fish. many were on that water.
Mickey Walsh, or was it Welsh, also a regular fishing partner for a while, I recall he was a good mate of Pete Regans. lived in Norwich at that time.
gets a bit sketchy from here,
,There was a Fella named Tony,tall, dark hair and tanned, cant remember his surname,always had good quality tackle [often for sale as he was always upgrading] he fished with his brother, looked of italian origin, but I think he came from essex way, a mate of a well known comedian who often joked the police had had his driving licence longer than he had.
most of these guys were regulars at Waveney Valley.
I don't remember the exact years,[I'm useless with dates and numbers generally]
but I remember a season ticket for Homersfield was £100.
that will do for start.
I realise this was over well 25 years ago, maybe much longer in some cases.
but you never know until you ask.

Dave Plummer had Norwich Angling Centre on Sprowston Road, right next to The Brickmakers pub, both places where I spent a lot of time, and money.
When Angling Direct started the tackle shop was closed down, and I thought he started running trips to France before going to the USA.

I too used to frequent that pub, when Clive and Mandy ran it.
helped out on the door occasionally.

I went Mahseer fishing with Dave Plummer in 2002 and 2004. He's still running trips abroad to various places like Florida, Costa Rica and Thailand these days. The UK is his base though.

But remember back then neither were a lot of them, that came later, some hated it, others revelled in it and often made a good living from it.
as for those little bags of salt, not sure but I expect some blame Jim Shelley!, he's been blamed for most things.

That's very sad news, I had no idea, was it recent, or a while ago. he was always a cheerful guy whenever I saw him.
I heard he sold the bait business.

Dave Thorpe was rumoured to have died around 1998, I was most surprised to see he had arisen from the dead and fishing for trout at Grafham water when I worked there.

I wondered, and a search did come up with an obituary, but for another Dave Thorpe, also a carp angler it seems.
the one I met was the bait maker. I used his bait back then, as many did.
I cant be certain, but I'm thinking I saw him around still in '98, possibly later that that.
I was pretty nomadic back then, and kept few records.

I remember Plumber's little shop before he moved to Sprowston Rd, used to cycle there for maggots and bought my first modern carp reels (shimano carbomatics) from him for my first trip abroad in the late 80s from his Sprowston shop.

Mickey had an eye for the ladies back then, well he was single at the time , I remember one night on a small syndicate water,, it was agreed whoever woke up first should make tea, so I have a carp around dawn and sacked it and duly put the kettle on, made two cups and made my way to Mickey, "tea up" I whispered, no answer,, again a little louder,"tea up!" still no answer,, so not wanting the tea to get cold I gave him a little nudge with my hand and Immediately thought,,
"thats odd", he sort of "wobbled" next thing I know Mickeys standing beside me?? "got another cup mate?" and a very attractive head appeared from the sleeping bag,, "two sugars please".
his current girlfriend had arrived in the night. I instantly knew why the "wobble" had occurred.

Dave Thorpe, heard he'd died whilst fly fishing, heart attack, have since heard many times he's still alive, he's got family I'm sure, but have never heard anyone confirm one way or another, v strange.
Maybe he no longer fishes and has moved abroad, maybe he has indeed died, hope not I liked Dave.

Things in the carp world were different back then, most people were helpful, including many of those that went on to become almost cult figures in that world.
Dave was one of those people. always friendly and had time for most people.
maybe disillusioned with the profit driven circus carp fishing has become? and has indeed moved on, and well I hope.

Thats what I was told, heart attack while fly fishing. I didn't know him personally but my mate did a bit and we got chatting to him one afternoon whilst he was fishing over darenth. he was testing a new bait out an off white colured base mix with a weird flavour. he gave us 5k of the mix and a bottle of the flavour all in blank packaging. we rolled some up the next day then did an overnighter on arena and had a few.. turned out it was the cold water mix and green beast.

Was he from the Oxford area. I think I might have bumped into him at Orchid in early 90's, he wasn't fishing though which makes me think he was local, walking the lake, talking about his bait.

Yes, he was happy to help and advise most people, generous and v humble tbh. He was catching a huge amount of fish at the time I met him, but would never talk down to or dismiss others.

Homersfield is just a shadow of its former self. Over priced and too many stupid rules.

and yes Norman was a well liked fellow, not one to suffer fools, but always helpful to us all back in the day.
a lot of the old well respected guys are sadly no longer with us.
many places have become less than they were back then, some through neglect, some by predation, other even by managerial changes.
but then some have improved greatly.

Yes Norman was a lovely chap as was his lovely wife Vera, who passed way too young.
He was instrumental in putting carp fishing on the map and accessible for many, when he opened Waveney Valley.
That and the importing of carp which stocked many waters.
