Anyone use a deeper? Are they worth getting to map out swims and find depths?

I have been wondering this myself for use on my bait boat. I have no idea what one I would need to get and I have also seen they do a range extender. It wouldn't be much use to me if i couldn't use it beyond 100 yrds, so if anyone could give their experience of using them it would be really helpful.

Can you use them off the back of a boat and is there is any benefit over a normal fish finder?

With Nd Wifi Extender

205 Yard: Signal good
240 yard: Lost signal


The box was to big for me so i bought the Deeper extender, range result: same as with the ND Wifi extender

I have the Deeper chirp+ 2 (2nd hand bought for €150 was never used) and it's very good, I use it with the New direction deeper mount.

My Tripod setup (crap phone camera)

Yes you can
Can even attach to a baiting pole
It will depend on what fish finder you are using and if you can get a mount for a boat
I'm sure you could mcgyver something to use on a boat

That's the nice thing with the deeper you can use it without a boat, never let it built into your bait boat but use a Deeper mount

You can also make you own range extender easily, for around half the price of the ND using the exact same technology.
Its a vonnets vap 11 inside, just need a box / aeriels as well.

And what did you get without the extender? As on the box or less?

I made the mistake of buying some china thing, 100 on the box, 30'ish in practice. I mean some deviation is to be expected, but not like that:P

They are very good all round but are excellent for short sessions save time rather than leading around or using a marker float

I have one. I don't use it every time I go fishing but has been really useful for finding depths. I've also towed behind my bait boat with some success but needs a proper mount. If you've got the money it's a useful gadget.

What does a proper mount do that simply tying the Deeper to the boat handle doesn't ? Not having a pop as I haven't got a Deeper or bait boat but just curious to what the difference is.

With the New Direction deeper mount your Deeper always sits at the correct depth in the water, with a small adjustment you can mount it on any bait boat

I brought one used it half a dozen times but can see them being good if you are fishing one or two lakes and can put some time a side to map a dozen or so swims

The 2 big waters that I have been fishing since this year, good luck there without any knowledge of the bottom, with the Bait boat + Deeper I found a few very good spots, there is a lot of weed on one of the waters with the Deeper I now have 6 spots that are weed free.

It's a good question. I started by tying the deeper to the boat handle with some braid. That works but I found when I stopped the boat the deeper would bump into the boat and the braid got fouled round either the lines or the boat prop.
I've rigged up a gadget with a bit of metal that keeps them separated but I'll get a mount for next year.

I found the deeper pretty useless on a proper boat. The level it needs to be in the water changes depending on where your weight is and any load you have and the travel on the mounts is not enough to deal with it. It also can't handle any real chop on the water and you have to be stationary to get a half decent response.

If you're going to be using a boat a lot I would bite the bullet and get a Raymarine Dragonfly.

Get a Garmin striker 4cv vivid for around £199 with transducer
Roughly the same price then
I just bought one but haven't used it yet but the demo looks great lol
