After some thoughts please.
A few years back for my then 8 year old

I started to cobble together a dwarf style setup
The rods don't match and both tips ended up broken but they do the job.
The reels are shimano 4000st little baitrunners. And I've never got on with them. The line twists and curls, I don't like the baitrunner kick drag is sticky etc. But I do like the compact size for some overgrown swims I use.
Small.lakes , short casts but I want to be able to use my beloved X-line. I use it on my Shimano 8000XTA reels
With no problems. My main setup is Free Spirit XS
With thise reels. I've had it years and never let me down
So I'm not looking for a backward step like the little baitrunners
I may upgrade to better rods but they will be 9 or 10 foot

I have Castizms (so same size as the 25a's you mention) on my lighter rods, and use 20lb Xline on them 90% of the time.
Have had no problems at all with it, which if I'm honest, surprised me. i do give it a stretch every now and them and reel in through a rag at the end of each session.
The Spool isnt much narrower than my ISO's, though obviously a much shorter stroke. Possibly why the line behaves on them?

I used xline on my little shimano 3500 originals for years without issues.
Fancied some newer reels with a slightly wider spool and got some fox eos 10000 baitrunners. Certainly not pit reels but are very good on smaller rods where casting distance is not that far, although they seem good enough when matched up to the rod. Also surprised at how smooth and well made they feel.

Noted. But to be honest Andy. I dont care for the jolt from the baitrunner no.matter how I try to match it to the front drag
And then the front drag is a lot of twisting. I like.the quick drag o my shimano xtas

How about some shimano 4500 size mini pits, not sure what new ones they do currently else I will be selling mine. I guess all they would need is different washers or drag cap

Emcast 25a great reels, sold my castizm 25's after buying two of the emcast and bought two more. Same but prefer the slower drag, think they look just as good and feel just as good when in use.

Fished 1 season with the emcast 25A in 2020, I rate them higher than the shimano 5500 XTD that I used last year.
Bought the new Daiwa 45 Scw SD (Black spool with fold handle) use them with my Daiwa 10ft rods although they are big pits i like them very well under my 10ft, always thought it would be too big but it's just fine, drag is also super smooth

The Okuma Inc 6000 is a superb reel for the money (and for lots more money) .... They surpass shimano mini pits in my experience (ive owned a few XTB's and XTC's Shimmies and currently own/use 6 Okuma's Inc 6000) and they are perfect size for what you need.

I had Sonik Extractors briefly but didnt like them ... Im not convinced on needing retracable facility, they felt a very basic rod and too stiff for me. I changed to ESP Stalker 9ft (non retractable). They feel totally diffferent and still have a small enough packdown ... but then i am an ESP fanboy when it comes to rods so I am a little biased

I've just put together a small setup for short range work. I know you said no going back to small bait runners, but I have to say, I've paired up a set of 8ft Sonik Recons with a set of original Shimano 6010 Aero GT's.
I used this setup over at York Lakeside Lodges last week and it felt perfectly balanced and a joy to use. I really like it.
By the way, absolutely disastrous fishing the weed was unbelievable and I should have taken a set of clubs instead.

I think the baitrunner thing is that I like.my biomasters xta 8000
So much, as big and heavy as they feel, especially on a runs water. They never twist or curl the line.
And the quick drag is easy to use, unfortunately they would be huge on 9 footers.

Another vote for the Inception 6000's. Used them for a while now and have sold my SS2600's and baitrunners as the Okumas are simply better reels IMO. They get a lot more use Barbel fishing than Carp fishing as well, and have been absolutely spot on.
If you wanted something bigger, I have a set of Emblem 45 SCW's for sale in the classified that are in excellent condition, but it all honestly I think the Okumas would suit your needs perfectly.

I spent £150 apiece on SS2600's with the Weston Developments QD caps, bought 3 Inception 6000's for £130, never used the S2600's again and sold them. Terrible value for money IMO, yeah they're a bit tarty and ‘old skool' looking, but they're wobbly relics.

But for my type of fishing (on the river where I need a decent retrieve to get a 4-10oz lead off the rocky bottom quickly), plus the fact I'm using the reel a lot more than when carp fishing, the smoothness and better retrieve of the Okumas just made them a better choice. It will be interesting to see how they fare long term, as currently they look at steal at sub-£50.

No one has mentioned Wychwood Extricator reels -biggest spool for body size i could find. Great little reels-larger arbor spools will keep springier lines a bit more manageable.

I have the TReX on a 10ft scope and it's great. The weight and size are fine as it sits on a pod 99% of the time.

What about Nash GT6000. Tried a mates and they are well matched to 10ft rods.
For some reason, Nash seem to get a bashing but that seems to be the same about everything depending on what you like.
My experience with anything I have from Nash has only ever been positive.

Dwarfs. I have a made for 10foot 3 rod dwarf bag, so would like to utilise that.
I'm leaning towards 10ft shrink dwarfs 3lbtc as I love

I have the Sonik Insurgents in 3.5 TC maybe a bit over gunned for what you want but they are are great rod you could drop down to 3lb or less
Reel wise the Okumas are a great choice for the money they are on par with my Penn's 👍💪

Do the insurgents have ceramic or minima style eyes? Would like some 6fters but would want to use braid and had a nightmare with the eyes on my mk2 scopes cutting in with braid

If i was buying retractable rods i would be looking at ESP Quickdraw .... If i were looking at 8' or 10' non retractable i would still look at ESP's (I went for Stalkers in the end). I had Soniks retractable briefly but returned them as were like broomsticks
