Lots of post on bivvies and winter condensation, but can anyone recommend a Bivvie/brolly that has really thick, sun stopping material?
This weekend has confirmed that my day shelter, which had planned to also use for summer overnighters, just doesn't block out the sun at all. Still felt the heat of the sun coming through while ‘shaded' under it, was pretty unpleasant. Know it's not too regular a problem in the UK, but how do you folks fare with your shelters and any you recommended?

Curious about this one too since I'm having the same issue. Have considered buying UV-blocker spray (Nikwax for example) but not a clue if that's any effective and whether it only adds protection for your material, or yourself too.

Probably easier (and cheaper) to put a brolly up over it in really hot sun, with the advantage that you can move it around as the sun moves to give you more shade.

Wear UV protection cream anyway. Bivvy material wont stop UV Ray's. Cool clothing and plenty of ice water. Of course a hat. Even better still fish dusk till around 7am.

I put a towel over my shelter to do much the same, but surely there's a better way and a product that's already considered this? What do folks fishing in France and Spain do? Sunscrean of course but the issue was not so much the UV as the heat from it.

The Karsten bivvy is made from tencate cotton canvas. Superb for the harshest weather, whether that be rain or sun. Very heavy though and expensive! I have one and I have not seen anything that compares with them for quality etc, but I only use on extended sessions or French trips.

If you Google sun shade sail. That might suit.
Could bungee it up.over the shelter using trees. Fence posts. Storm poles etc.

what about a bivvy with an inner capsule like a Trakker SLX V3?

Would depend on the outer material I'd have thought. Most camping tents have inner capsules but don't block out much sunlight.
Do any of the more expensive materials like aquatexx block out sunlight/UV?

Yeah canvas works, used a mate's bell tent once at a festival - sooo much more pleasant than a regular tent. But also enormously heavy, must have weighed 40kg. Was hoping there might be something that blocks the sun without being canvas.

When the strong sun is on the biv I just get out of it, only way I can survive, and sit in shade if I can't do that I'm moving

Yeah as said the Karsten canvas bivvy is heavy. Mine is the smaller one which is 2.2m square and the basic bivvy is 19kg alone! That is without pegs etc, but does include a very thick and heavy built-in ground sheet. I would have thought something with a skull cap would be the way to go for a day shelter. I have a JRC Bloxx compact and the skull cap makes a good difference. Can't compare with single skin canvas, but.....

Ive had cabanon 100% canvas frame tents and even they dont really stay that cool in full sun/heat but do reduce the full glare ..... Anything polyester or polyester no matter how thick you will just roast so that pretty much rules out most bivvies .... Your best bed is to sit under natural shade or i guess use a parasol

I've got to say I've just come back from a baking session in the north west. There was a stone flag in my peg that I cracked an egg on and it cooked it was that hot. The Frontier XD with the vapour wrap over the top and and all windows rolled down was absolutely spot on with a light breeze drafting through the bivvy.
Honestly the best bivvy I've personally ever owned.

If you want to block out the UV nickwax or fabsil uv are what you need
I would suggest that you use Fabsil gold in the winter it's twice as thick so helps with condensation using the fabsil uv for the summer only.

That might blocks the UV rays so you don't burn but does it actually make the bivvy cooler?

Neverless blocking UV is important
I'd stick to a nylon bivvy with a couple of vents and a decent USB fan 👍🏼 Works for me.

In the absence of natural shade, surely a simple old school brolly with the same UV blocking treatment would be even cooler.

The 100t wont donit, i have a 100 brolly and have issues with the heat from the sun. The skull cap works but doesnt cover the whole thing so no good when the sun is behind.
I imagine the skull cap wrap would work well, but not sure if it would cause the brolly to be hotter over all.

I'm sure ive read on here that European anglers get a beach towel and soak it in the lake and put it on top of the bivvy, never tried it myself, but is apparently cools the bivvy right down,

Cheers for the tip, can see it has a blackout material built in, which sounds like just the kind of thing required. I wonder if any other bivvies/shelters also have this built in? (Hopefully some that aren't £600!)

For the past few years I was using a tempest 100t with a skull cap now I loved that bivvie but in the sun it didn't help at all to point with even the vents open and no front on I couldn't sit in it, this year I got a fox frontier X and that thing is brilliant in the sun, I use it again with the vapour peak and it's pitch black in there even at midday.
I open the vents and I can just sit in there all day if I wanted it's like being in the shade the sun don't get in apart from the obvious places like the door and the vents but it's so cool in there, I was out at the weekend in it was in a pretty open swim with no shade around and was lovely cool inside

Sounds like a winner to me - exactly what I'm looking for.
Shame it's twice the weight and twice the money of the 100T. I'd best get saving!

Frontier comes with groundsheet and front panel, 100T not price diffrence is not that big, i payed €480 for my X, just keep an eye on deals

It is a very good bivvie mate and like mentioned it comes with everything, my 100t I had to buy everything separate. I only paid £490 for my frontier X because I waiters for a bank holiday sale and got 10% off aswell which helped

Good point.
Any regrets on getting the X vs the XD? Footprint and weight seems much the same but the extra 25cm of head height looks appealing on the XD. Having not seen one in the flesh though perhaps the X is plenty big enough.

I first had the XD with inner dome because of the height until I saw the x in the shop and was surprised how high it was despite the 140H, I don't feel like I'm in a really low bivvy, the x is a bit easier to setup too because you don't have to open your arms so high compared to the Xd.
If you want king space for a small outdoor footprint get the XD, but the space in the X is still huge

Amazing, thanks dude. Really useful seeing you can get two bed chairs in the XD like that, something id like to have the option to do (even tho 99% of the time I won't be). Can you do the same in the X?

A buddy of mine has the Xd and puts 2 beds in it and still has a lot of space in the middle but the beds do come against the wall, the XD of me in the link is with a trakkel oval Rlx (oval bed is a space saver) and an the Rm junior bed is only 150 x 70 cm is
On facebook is another photo of an Xd with overwrap with 2 beds in it, the 2 beds don't touch the walls because he zips out the front of the Xd and uses the front of the overwrap, hopefully soon (normal this year) there will be an Social cap for the frontier that will be ideal for 2 beds.

If needed yes you can but it's not optimal, all the Frontiers are 1 man bivvies.
