With the ever increasing use of wafters / pop ups etc I'm wondering whether anyone still uses a hookbait straight out of the bag and with what degree of success . I'm just wondering whether this could give you an edge as I rarely see anyone doing this , thanks.

If they are eating the freebies then use one out of the bag. If you fish for a bite and not fishing over many free baits then use a glugged bait.

Always. I've been using DNA SLK shelf.life for 3 years.
Nearly.always just use a boilie from the bag fished as a bottom bait.

Yes, on a method feeder used the same pellets on a pond I was fishing on holiday recently, great little pond between Chester and mold, caught 13 , made me think I should use the same bait. But slightly bigger. They wasn't interested in my boilies on the other rod.

Thanks for the replies . Just wondering if we're missing a trick and over complicate things . They are sucking in lots of different items all of the time so is the weight of a hook going to be that noticeable when moving from one freebie to another.

Moving from one freebie to another, the weight of the hook, you just hit on the reason for using a hair

Simplified, but Boilie is sucked in, taken to back of mouth and crushed in pharyngeal teeth, swallowed.
Boilie on hook, weight of hook and bait not going in to back of mouth.
Boilie on hair, around 15-20mm (example), bait is sucked in, taken to back of mouth, hook follows. Carp attempts to blow out non food items, hook in lip...

Bait out of the bag works. Loads of my fish have come on hookbait same as the freebies.

All the time, never done anything different..

Here's another way of looking at things..

The float angler has 200 floats,he has a favourite float, and used it for years, the other 199,don't get used much,..

Same as all these dedicated super boosted, rocket powered ,mega critically balanced baits that get bought used once then put away ,never to be seen again..

Straight out of the bag or same as what you have made ,on the hair ,get it out in the pond ,do your location,.make sure your hook is sharp....relax ..!

Carping is so simple,...

I'm hungry now Snapper,

OK I'm going in that chippy, salivating ..mmmm...,yum yum, fish chips ,curry sauce.. I'm the first customer,so it's all freshly cooked..

Then ,I'm down the lake ,sitting on the bench ,scoffing the lot..back to car ,get float gear ,some roach fishing..lol..

(I get what you mean)...😄

Hookbait same as the freebies wherever possible. I don't bother glugging.
There was a time when your hookbait had to be as identical to your freebies but times and fads change.

I used to critically balance baits (wafters) but decided that I don't want a bait that moves around caused by a fish approaching the bait.
If I do use a pop up I want it weighted down so the required pop up height is achieved but it doesn't move from the spot.

Test it on one rod in your lake(s). Lots of people will be for this, lots of people won't. Best way to know if it will give you an edge is try it out!

Years ago before wafters there was an article on how to negate the weight of hook and line. You just hooked a bit of cork on the hook, cut it down to just taking weight, remove it then make a bolie out around this as you normally would. No wafting just adding back the correct buoyancy. Does it matter - all the 1%s I guess. Whilst I spent all last winter using a plain bottom bait out the batch, I did and always would add something to help the rig act the same as a freebie.

I also use at least 2 sizes of baits and thier ain't a carp around that can work out the exact suck per bait. Like most things, it's about how easy or difficult you want it to be - I prefer overthinking and may cost me or help me but it's all fun.

Sharp hooks. 3 years ago I stopped being lazy and started to sharpen every cast. Whilst I had the kit, and knew it was worth it. I wouldn't bother IF I felt it was sharp enough, or hadn't had a run, or it was dark, or raining etc.

Now I do it. And if I cock it up and take a better edge of with a pass I keep doing it until its sticky sharp.

Since then , I have consistently caught more fish.

That's a good answer but whilst on bench I would hope you would be watching the water. It's simple mistakes that can make or break a trip, well done though on going in to the chippy .

Oh yes ,visualisation.of the intended quarry always paramount on my bench for sure..

A few decent ,curry sauce flavoured chips flicked into the depths ,confirmed they be there..but on this trip its all about cod chips ,curry sauce,a bit of roaching on the pin,...wife turns up with dog, plus two cold rattlers..

Living the dream mate..

Plus ,I do indeed ,mainly use hookbaits straight from packet,no worries or lack of confidence..

Good luck,baint zackly..👍

A good old bottom bait is a very good tactic right now! Big and heavy ones too!

Agree with that!

Also, linked to the thread title, does anyone use boilie freebies that haven't been 'pimped/soaked/prepped' in some way, just straight out the freezer?

yeap, straight out the bag, i know full well the carp are feeding on my feeebies, so having a hookbait thats exactly the same as im feeding them has got to be an advantage.

what do they call it these days "match the hatch"

It is an interesting point, whether dousing freebies with liquids and whether or not it helps / makes a difference.

that phrase irritates the hell out of me absolutely ridiculous.

I dont use baits straight out of the bag as they are generally soft/soluble and so use a matching hardened hook bait, normally without and additional liquid added.

totally agree with you re "out the bag" being softer etc, but there's ways round that, ie meshing or shrink tubing
