Afternoon chaps,
I'm in the middle of building myself a rolling station, got all my tables screwed on boards that can be changed over easily. I remember seeing a mod years ago either on YouTube or a forum where someome used a heavy liquid that set hard in the lid sections to give it more weight, making rolling easier work. I can't find it searching on google for toffee, does anyone else remember it and what was the liquid that was used?
Cheers,
Mike.

Could have been a sloppy mix of rapid set cement, or floor levelling compound or bonding plaster?

Thanks for your input. Floor levelling compound could well work, it's got to be slightly flexible and have good adhesion as the lid will end up getting dropped at some point and don't want a load of cracked debris rattling round in there

A thick sheet of lead with cutouts for the handles would be inter changeable between table tops.

I've seen all sorts used, in a pinc you can use sand and then seal the top part, although I havent measured the longevity of gardners that have hard that done.

I wouldn't expect any of the recently purchased gardener tables to last anyway. The quality of the mouldings is absolutely garbage. Wish I'd never sold all the ones I had years ago.
I was kind of hoping that some whizz kid would start making decent quality affordable tables from 3d printing or some other similar methods.
By far the best table I've got is a Shillam but jeeez he knows how to charge.

Shillhams are a sore spot for me. extrelemy highly priced considering the material by his own admisssion fails regularly and chips.
Im looking at purchasing another set of blades for hookbaits but under no circumstances will anything other than sieved smooth soft mixes go anywhere near them as even bog standard fishmeals give it more chips than gary linnekars pockets in a walkers factory.

He's changed the material now.. the new blades are made from some sort of durable plastic or ceramic I think. I messaged him to ask why the new blades are white.

Your not wrong about the quality of the new compared to my old ones. Ones not too bad, doesn't line up the best. The other one had lips I had to sand off every section, still very stiff to use after spending ages trying different combos to line it up. I should drop them an email complaining really, appalling selling **** like that. I'm never paying shillam prices, may as well stretch to machines if paying that sort of money! Definitely a gap in the market for someone who knows what they're at with plastics!

This is a link to a video of one I bought last year I think. I've posted it before on here. Be warned it's a frank and honest opinion that was filmed to be sent to my fishing mates and not intended for snowflakes. It's not for viewing by under eighteens or by anyone that might be easily offended cos I use sweary words and as we all know now, words are violence.
Does show very well just how absolutely ***** Gardner tables are now and might save someone wasting money.

Just a slight tangential question - if you wouldn't use the large gardner tables but can't stretch to the expensive Shilham tables, what would you recommend that's somewhere in the middle?
I roll small amounts for myself each week and usually do a mix of chops and 14mm baits.

The Corus/Carp Spirit tables are cheap and roll perfectly acceptable food baits.

Has anyone used Shllhams cheap range of tables? He does some for £20 each

They are the same as the ones I've just listed. They are actually ok for feed baits. I wouldn't fancy rolling pop ups on them but for everything else they are fine.

Be fine for me then mate, I dont really roll my own popups very often, and roll my hookbaits by hand anyway. Looked a bargain really compared to the Gardner ones

I've not used them but I've got there Cork ball pop up maker and it's superb and it's cheaper than any other brand I've seen...

To give the table more weight ( top section) use a thick piece of MDF.
This is based around the carp spirit tables. ( and many other brands that look identical)
Turn the top section upside down and insert wood dowels Inyo the 13 mm wide plastic holes and glue in place. Aim for a tight fit and ensure they don't stick out proud.
Measure the layout of the centre of the holes ( dowels) on to the MDF.
Drill pilot holes in the MDF.
Screw the MDF into the rolling table top piece.
Get a couple of handles from B and Q and bolt these onto the MDF. ( midway in the process) ie before screwing MDF to rolling table top.

they are pretty poor to start with
mine is screwed to boards and then i had to sand the moulds flush in places
tbh your better off getting the smaller 1 piece units from other places to get over this issue

If you google " fishdeal rolling table" its literally right there....
they're terrible for any sort of quantity or heavy usage though, bought one for hookbaits as shilham chip like a chipmunk and it lasted a fortnight, it pains me to say I'll have to keep buying shilham blades as gardner dont do 15mm and we moved onto that size of bait. joy.

base section on an MDF frame set at a 30 degree angle so the baits roll out the bottom, top ''hopper'' made from an old gardening tray so cut a slot into so my sausages can roll intp the top of the rolling table.
top half of the rolling table i attached to a thick slab of MDF with some handles on the top, up and down and i have perfect boilies and a fast roll rate when all my mix is gunned into sausages.
the tables do take some sanding and shaving to get spot on, but mine are like butter now.
i dont use this for hookbaits only bulk boilies.
as mentioned below the 1 piece tables are much better for hookbaits as they're more uniform

My fishdeal table has been very good but only rolled about 30 kg since having it.
I can manage 5 sausages at once.
It goes in the dishwasher every few months and comes out looking new.

I'm only looking to make a couple of KG at a time with a single base mix so nothing too bulk making style.

I just do the dishwasher when she goes out.
Banksticks and pegs have been known to go in as well at times.

Seen lots of table set ups on YouTube they show tables set at an angle.
Far easier to have the table mounted flat but hinged IMO.

if you're doing a few kg id defo suggest buging one of the tables mentioned below.
fishdeal or gardner. mount on some wood and clamp it down so its stable. wont take long to roll a kg or 2.

tried the hinged set up and works very well, just i get a bad back so working standing up with the table at the correct height helps my back.

Granted I'm basing my opinion on its ability to make sellable product not home rolled.
To be fair apart from a throwing stick I'm st a loss as to why any homenroller would want to make bait round, it's like giving yourself a handicap before you begin.
What all plastic tables are good for ( being a finer edge that a shilham) is a pillow shaped bait. These are very good and I particularly like them for rivers

I never roll all mine round for myself. I vary the nozzle sizes as Im gunning out my own batches, using the same table, so i get a mixture of round and barrels. I also use all the odd off cuts and bits from the end of the table. Sometimes i dont even bother rolling mine as i spod most of mine, so i just gun out the sausages and do chops.

All boilie rollers will recommend pressed out pillow shapes, saves the ballache of rolling.
But yes, they are a great shape and I use them myself when fishing short catty range.

i normally roll a mixture, barrels pillows and rounds.
my favorite is just boiling the sausages for a few mins and breaking them off into small rounds when im fishing.
2 sides without a skin for maximum leakage, wicked for edge fishing.
boiling is also questionable at times. in the warmer months i roll the paste on the table, dust with some milk powder and freeze them, keep em in with a few ice blocks them catty them into the lake, they defrost in the water and work really really well when short session fishing.

Little tip to try. Swap out the egg for water, roll and just air dry for a few days without boiling. No good for hookbaits of course but you've effectively made slow break down pellets

When you're on cylindrical rollers it makes no difference at all, only if rolling on tables.

That is absolutely hideous. PayPal are the bowlocks, they will give you your money back.
After they do give you your money back, don't bin that. Screw it all down to a board to make it solid. Get to work and sort it, rub them all out with some fine paper to finish. The baits will taste far sweeter, after being rolled on a free table. Be luckier baits too.
If you have no joy, I have an older one of those already screwed to a bit of board, that all lines up perfectly (yours might not).18mm size, it's in the back of the shed. Next time you are in the UK pick it up if you want it.
