I've had a search using the forum search but not much came up on chilli vs garlic/fermentation/salt.
Listening to the latest Lee Jackson podcast he rates the chilli. I rate Jacko! Must be something you can over do though. How much dry chilli flake would people be happy to put in a kilo of cooked hemp assuming you do it that way round?

It depending on the strength of the chilli to be fair.
3-10% by weight to the dry hemp. Obviously generally more than what's used with boilies but you're gonna end up with 1.7kg hemp from a kilo dry and also dilute it with cooking and the water.
It's not really something you can over do because the hemp is either split and it will dilute when it enters tge lake, or not all split and it'll wash off, it's more what gets infused into the seed than the amount of red bits afterwards.
And yes it's a very good additive but lake specific, makes a huge difference in some, absolutely none in others

Thanks Mozzi, I was going to add the chilli after the boil to keep the potency and save my eye balls!

The heat helps to draw the oils out the flakes and infuse the seeds

I have never found adding chilli to hemp make it any better.
It may be that the lakes I used hemp on, it is not 'overfished', so adding chilli did not improve results. This may back up Mozzis comment that it works on some lakes not on others, and the reason why.
I have however added Verselle Laga Garlic Oil (pigeon birdfood suppliers)at 5ml per kilo of hemp, and that has improved it when added at the soak, although it stinks when you boil it up.

5 ml garlic essential oil into 250ml hemp oil, add as you see fit. Cold water friendly oils to boot.

same here, chilli has never made a difference when i've used it alongside just pure boiled hemp.
re Garlic, long extension lead, burco and boil it at the end of the garden. Wife is happy, neighbours might not be

I was interested to hear Jacko saying he found that fish would re-visit areas he baited with chilli hemp days after they had been fed on. His belief was the chilli gets into the lake bottom and keeps them digging about.
I cooked up about 3 kg of finished hemp yesterday as a test run. Drained while hot then mixed in a handful of rock salt, glug of oil, two large spoons of hot chilli powder and three spoons of a spice mix. Then topped up with a bit of the warm cooking water.
I reckon I'd eat it for what that's worth!

Why mess about with hemp? It's awesome just as it is, and adding stuff to it detracts from that imo. Same with tigers. Nice and fresh and plain is the way to go

I think I tried to answer that in post 8.
Would you put salt or spices in any bait for attraction or palatability?

Not the best ones like hemp tigers maize no. Maples a bit of sweetener. Pigeon conditioner takes stuff well, and I always used to add bits but have learnt there's no need and it makes no difference to results so no longer bother . I keep the spices for my boilies
Jacko, legend that he is, imo is wrong. It's the hemp itself that keeps them grubbing about. They don't get every single grain straight away so there's always something there to draw them in to some extent

Actually, adding palatable additives to anything can improve it. The more food and investigative triggers in your area the high the likelihood of inducing a fish to feed. Hemp is brilliant on its own but there definately been documented occasions where chilli gets them onto it where plain hemp fails.
It isn't all the time mind, as I previously said, but it's never detracted from it in personal experience.
A firm favourite is hemp cooked with garlic AND chilli, because A, it smells delicious lol, and B, tge combination of the two seems to outweigh the effectiveness of the singular additive or plain hemp the majority of the time.
My preference for making garlic hemp is actually to slice two bulbs in half and soak / cook with them as opposed to the oil mentioned, just trying to save Nick a few Bob

In your opinion nick
Too many "investigative triggers" as you scientists call them could possibly have a detrimental effect imo, and as none of us are actually carp we'll never know for sure either way. All I know is I've been using hemp for over 30 years now and in all that time ,my thoughts are leave it alone and let the little seeds work their magic. If something needs all these extra bits in then maybe it's not that good a catcher as it is ..

I've tried Hemp with garlic, chilli and paprika and combinations of the Spices and don't think any have been any better than plain Hemp for holding fish. One benefit of the Spices is that the Hemp doesn't go off so quickly, I've always found Hemp best when really fresh and if the Spices keep it to fresh for an extra day it might be helpful in some circumstances.

You may very well have, but i'd hazard you dont have the combined experience of all my customers who actively choose chilli and garlic hemp.
And you're correct, too many investigative triggers can begin to nullify each other, but these 3 very different items have very different compounds working in very different ways.

That's the thing nick, if they choose to add garlic and chilli every time, how do they know how it compares to plain stuff ? Unless you constantly fish both those side by side you'll never really know for sure. They may be missing a trick by not using plain, just as much as I may be in sticking with plain everywhere. We ain't fish. We don't "know" anything regarding bait at all. It's all just a matter of opinion

Likewise hemp is great, to good sometimes, preoccupation .I usually mix it up with stuff, unlike years ago , over the last few years I have got a few jars of hemp with the chillies in and found it very very good for holding fish, I can't prove its been better than normal hemp, but my confidence is higher now with the chilli.
And garlic well that's always been a winner in its various forms over decades, best was amino compound with garlic by solar.
With the hemp less is more, put far to much in years ago

They all used to use normal hemp lol.
I'm personally not hugely bothered as I am in the fortunate or unfortunate position where 99% of my angling is field testing, I don't have time to relax and enjoy the tge final product once it's all signed off as there is always something else ticking. Been experimenting with lots of different bits recently most of which don't combine well with particles / are designed for different feeding situations etc etc.
But some of these experience anglers out most people I've spoken to to shame with their ability and some of them have the knowledge they could genuinely sell very good gear themselves so I tend to listen and throw ideas around with them and there is a undeniable link between carp and chilli, on certain venues.
I prefer tigers and maize anyway 😂

Didn't everyone used to use normal lol?! Like you say too, on certain venues chilli can make a huge difference, on others though not so much, and I've had plain gear consistantly outdo spiced up gear on other places. There's no hard and fast rules where carp bait is concerned. I'll agree on tigers, but maize, that's 3rd or 4th for me at best. As far as particles go, most have their day imo.

In most of the cases people buy stuff due to a hype created by someone else. In addition, they never thoroughly test it.
Sheep are still sheep and follow the herd without questions asked

I've had a good result using heavily baited maize. Caught loads of tench amongst the carp though. No bream strangely enough. Everything has its day I suppose. Trial and error, takes guts to be brave enough to go all in on a bait that's unproven on a water. I don't have the banktime to do it any more so just use what I know will catch. Might not be the ultimate bait, however I am confident it will catch a few.

ill take that lol. they ask questions, seem to analyse stuff. when I used to try to explain things to joe public at shows it went over a lot of peoples heads but slowly its built up a base of people genuinely interested in their bait.
