Hey guys,

Just got my hands on a Trakker Tempest 100T with Skull Cap, Social Cap, Groundsheet and Insect Panel.

Any advice from those who have used one to keep it in good nick?
Anything I should watch out for while putting it up/taking it down?

Thanks in advance 👍

Hi there, few pointers:

1. When packing away ensure there is no material in between the end of the poles at either end, it can pinch and tear.
2. Don put it up or down with the door closed, you didn't mention the infil panel, but is what trakker say too.
3. The ,material is the thin nylon type, so be extra careful with smoking or cooking near it, same goes for bbq sparks.
4. If using the magnet type hooks or bivvy lights ensure there are no sharp edges on either as they can pinch and rip the material either.
5.with the skullcap, if you take it off to pack away, ensure the ends of the 3 poles have no material in front of them as they can mark and damage the material too.
6. If using storm poles use the 3 foot extenders the 4 foots are a bugger to fit with skull cap on and you end up pushing them down under tension of the material with pointed poles end.

Fan it out when putting it up. Hold the two furthest ribs apart
And splay it out walk back a bit while doing so and it will take shape. Only then use the erecting pole and hub.

Amazing. Thanks for writing these out. I'll be sure to remember them!

And good point. It does come with the infil panel too so will remember about that too.

Thanks again!

the most IMPORTANT POINT the obvious one of course

never ever pack it away wet for any length of time if you have to pack up in the rain as soon as you can open it out and dry it at home
I loaned an almost new spare bivvy to a mate after he had his gear stolen when he returned it he failed to tell me he had packed up in the rain
I put it away in my loft for 10 months then someone put up a wanted add for one so sold it next morning the guy was back the inside had delaminated and it was like large areas and strips of rubber durex hanging down everywhere

Whilst some infill I've had have had fiddly zips
The one with my 100t takes seconds to.connect and zip on.

So personally I take it off, if I've used it. Less chance of getting caught up and.damged. I like it open fronted as.much as possible anyway. Especially when sorting your kit in and out.

If the weather nice. I like to put the GS down and make the bed
First at the best angles for visibility and wind direction.
Then pop the shelter up around it.

I also don't use the tension strap. I find once I've pegged the three rear points. If I push the front left and right ribs in an inch or so and then peg it sits perfect and the infill still fits great.

Thread the storm poles into the infill before pegging it out and this issue is solved with either sized sticks.

And this, I live in a flat, so it's a pain in the bum, but make sure tit is dry before packing away properly everytime. Normally spread it out in the bath if it's really wet, or in the hall way if it's just a bit of condensation. Not ideal, but keeps it in good nick

Any other accessories you use with yours?

While all the points below are certainly valid, I will throw in my 2p worth.

I got the 100t last summer, admittedly I do not take care of my bivvy. I have always packed it away wet, never taken it out to dry it out, left it wet in the bags for months.

I have never had any issues with the bivvy, never been mouldy, never smelt funny, material never failed etc

I have been very impressed with mine, I tried out quite a few bivvies before the 100t and I cannot see myself changing.

Only thing I would suggest is a larger bivvy bag to store it in as the one it comes in is quite tight.

That's good to hear that the quality has impressed you to keep it above others.

The main reason I wanted it was for its height and ability to add the Social Cap for when the misses wants to tag along.

I'm 6ft8 so no bivvy is ever going to be big enough! Haha but excited to try it on an overnighter soon.

The 3 rod support bar is a godsend, fits between uprights - does what it says on the tin, but much better than the 2 that are either side of door, especially if raining.

If you are fishing a 'dodgy' lake where spod and marker rods go walkies in the night you can also fold your rods in 2 and velcro them in the skullcap fittings.

Yep i just watched this too as it looked relatively useful, the video is funny too, made me laugh but i dont think ill be buying one right now. I also have this bivvy , having used many different ones over the years this one is pretty damm good all round . Had mine a couple of years not treated it like a princess but i do dry it out if i pack the whole thing away wet if its a little damp roud the skirts i just open the bag up and let it breathe / condensate out. the only thing thats broke is one of the elastics down the pole which happens on every bivvy ive ever owned.
I also own a aqua F&L which i use for shorter sessions but if i had to keep one of the 2 it would be the tempest , with the g/s infill and skull cap i love it. the material is light and hard wearing . quick to put up , easy to pack down. Bag is too small really wouldnt be surprised if its the same as the rest of the tempests and thats why its so snug. but it does fit, and i pack mine away with the infill on.
Id like the option to fold back the sides further personally without using clothes pegs but its not the end of the world. Overall a great bivvy.

Yeah looks to be slightly flexible.

But seems overkill as you would have 2-3 rods out and then 1 spot rod and maybe 1 marker rod on the current rod straps.

I have the 100T, it's the ideal shelter for me. Plenty of space, plenty of height, goes up and down quick and doesn't weigh a ton.

I don't think I'll bother with that strap contraption though, you can just lean three rods on the back no bother without it?

Not really to be honest. I only use it as a brolly, so no accessories. I did think about the mozzi mesh, but I always think they trap as much in as keeping out!

No special care, I pack it up wet if it's wet and it's fine. Same went for the original tempest Brolly it replaced. The beauty of nylon shelters.

What prevents me from buying one is the cloth, you can see through it , I don't think it's ideal for the colder nights and if it rains in terms of condensation, yes you can buy a wrap that will help but for you still have a bivvy with paper thin cloth.

The concept is great hope Trakker comes soon with the 100T aquatexx version

I prefer the nylon to the Aquatex on my Armo. Lighter, dries quicker and needs no care at all.

I don't want a pitch black hovel to sit in, just something that keeps the rain out. And I don't use a front so no condensation.

But different people want different things from a shelter.

I had the 100T and got rid of it due to bad condensation issues. I used the skull cap and always had the front open, never cooked etc in it. On colder nights it was literally dropping. Had the same issue with the Nash Hide Pro Xl too. I now have the Fox Frontier X and have fished in sub zero temps with no condensation inside the bivvy at all.

So strange that. I have the 100T and have fished with it
In all conditions. I've never had the door down but often thw sides are on.

Yet I've never had much condensation . And once I got the skull cap. Absolutely none.

Maybe I don't breathe.

Yep. Didnt realise until I came to peg the front and it was all lopsided. As the skull cap bar still went in so it seemed fine
And I couldn't see it had sheared off when standing above it.

So no big bang or excessive force. It just went.

Not.a.chance it opened nice and easy. I've got 15
Years of wrangling a full size pioneer too.

However, it's made at a budget and under a lot.of tension when erected. Its gone at a stress point.

Regarding condensation...

I knew I would be fishing through the last big storm and wanted to be on the end of it, but not under any overhead trees for obvious reasons! I treated myself to the infill for the 100T having only ever used it as a brolly type shelter in the past.

After this weekend at -1C I can confirm the following findings;

Infill in with door open - condensation
Infill removed so just the brolly - no condensation

I don't bother with a groundsheet. If you don't want condensation don't mess about with doors and panels on the front, have it completely open and its dry as a bone.

Possibly, but I don't use one. In summer they are pointless and in winter they just get caked in mud. My point was if you don't have a front on your shelter you don't need one.

Don't put your bags in the bit with the stream?

If it's raining that heavy then it's also coming in the front, and I'd rather it soak into the ground than puddle up on a sheet of plastic.

If people want to carry a groundsheet around it's up to them, I'm just saying if you don't have a front on a brolly you don't need one to stop condensation.

The power of hindsight and all that. But with the ground sheet, i didnt need to worry about it. Its hardly heavy, and folds flat on the barrow under my bedchair
Top of the groundsheet is bone dry. And why would water running down a slope come in the front? Its wasnt pooling up, it was running under the groundsheet, down towards the lake

The condensation I had was a very thin layer which then evaporated in the morning when I opened the door.

Are people getting worse condensation that is then dripping down onto you and your gear?

Ive spoken to Trakker. As its 18 months old they no longer cover it on warranty. That's only a year.

What has sheared off is a hex bolt. The majority of which is was still in the pole. Unscrewed that so I don't need to pay for another pole.

Instead it's 14.99 for a 3 bolt kit as a package. So presumably
This has happened before. Also 5 quid postage.
Still, better than a new bivvy I suppose.

So some bolts posted work out at nearly 10% of the overall value of the bivvy? Better than a new bivvy yes, but they are taking the piss with that price. What is happening with the ripped part?

I'm hoping the ripped part isn't important. It's a paper thin
Bit of well paper stuff. And it's just seems.to have pulled out

Personally I think the benefits from a higher rated HSH fabric are lost as they do not breath so easily and take forever to dry out...

ALL single skin bivvies or brollies will get condensation so matter what fabric it's made from so the positives from a higher rated fabric are limited imo.

No pics yet. But I fixed it. In case anyone's following this or for the future. The 3 front poles that you put the skup cap into.
They have a threaded hex bolt screwed into the end that hold stormpole adapters on the left and right and also holds in place
An eyelet that makes the rain gutter.

Now that I've replaced the broken one. I can see that the hex bolt snapped just where the thread starts. The torn black material might have some slight reinforcing qualities but I think is mostly aesthetics.

It's working perfectly now as is. Which leads me to believe that the bolt failed and would have pinged off and torn the black material.

Fair enough 👍

Skull cap does work well, I like the simple attachment and how it just hooks over the peg heads.

I was using cheap NGT platform pegs the other weekend and everything worked great with um.
