New quality fishmeal/shellfish bait required…. (23 posts / 4,230 views)

Having just had a bad experience with my mates deep freeze; I now have no bait.

I need a reasonable quantity (iro 20 kg) of top quality bait for all season use for different species - carp, chub, barbel and tench. Not necessarily in that order.

I'm an old school angler who has been around the block and can catch fish. I'm prepared to pay a decent price for a quality bait. My style involves small quantities of bait in the right place on short sessions.....

In the past I've made my own bait eg colne valley, and more recently used suppliers such as John Baker, 3 rivers and Baitworks. I'm based nr Swindon.

I'm looking for a top quality fishy/shellfish bait in varied sizes and open to suggestions - having done a trawl thru this site names like Trent baits, Aquabaits etc etc pop up. What are the best fishy boilies out there ?

One supplementary question; are modern shelf life baits a viable option for my sort of fishing -or is a frozen bait inherently better ?

Any constructive suggestions gratefully received.......

Trent's Freshwater Shrimp is a class bait and would certainly meet your criteria. It's worked everywhere I've taken it.

I've used aqua bait since it first come about. Couldn't recommend it highly enough. Served me well through my time using it on a vast array of busy circuit waters around the country. Good quality that is consistent, reasonably priced and all made in House by an old school angler who's been about and done it all. If you want any Advice or assistance with any of his bits I'm happy to help. (Or give him and buzz and have a chat Spence is sound)

If your prepared to pay a decent price I would 100% take a look at Rollinbaits optimum. The bait is very high in milk proteins, the boilies are exceptionally soluble, so they leak out their attractors readily. This makes a lovely soft bait that i prefer.I don't fish for barbel personally but a bloke called Dave is associated with Rollinbaits and is regularly in the mags with some huge barbel some of which are close to 20lb! He swears by the optimum.

Yes I get my bait on the cheap from Rod Hutchinson, but I choose what I use.

As a good food bait I can honestly recommend the KMG. It is a shelf life bait, but held its own on Alton Water where I was catching regularly. It has also produced on my syndicate.
KMG LINK

I can also recommend the new Infusion which is available in shelf life and frozen.

Premier Baits Matrix is my go-to red fishmeal. Proven bait over many many years.

My mate has done well with the chub using it too

You will get 100 different answers. Baits such a personal thing and all about confidence 9 times out of 10 if your confident in it you will catch if your not your just chop and change to regularly. Just stick with a tried and tested one loads out there

I've just ordered their multipack that has a little of all four baits in, haven't looked at it yet as had it delivered to my old mans as he was at home, I know the optimum is the go to but how about the rest?

I don't know if I can warrant the price. Is it twice as good as the rest?

Shellfish B5 has stood the test of time and seems to fit your requirements, also other decent fish meal baits about.

I only use shelf-life baits at the moment and have found them excellent for my short sessions with small amounts being used, predominately broken, squashed, crumbed in my fishing.

Not sure about frozen bait being inherently better, it's how it's being used that makes the difference IMO.

I'd recommend DNA S7 for the simple reason it works and it works quickly

Sticky krill or Dna SLK. Both very fishy and good bulk deals to be had as well. Personally I've used sticky krill for 5 years+ now and I used to change to a different bait every season. The krill is so good that I have not felt the need to change. I know the fish like it, its going in so many waters and it just keeps working year after year. Check out TFT as they do bulk deals direct from the Sticky factory. Saves you about £50 on normal price for 25kg.

If you can afford it, Rollin Baits' Optimum is outstanding-designed by Dave Moore.
Alternatively, I can also highly recommend their ‘The Game' mix-its not cheap but more affordable than Optimum if you feel the need to fish over larger quantities of bait.

Heard good things about the Spectrum Baits fishmeal (I think it's the only bait he currently does). One of my mate's and he did very well on it.

You could probably ask this question to ten different anglers and you'd get ten different answers.

There's far more qualified people than me when it comes to this subject but all I would say is find something rolled by a quality producer and give it a good go.

I've been using CC Moore for easily 5-6 years now and have done very well on their frozen and shelf Pacific Tuna baits, however I'm just about to place this years order with them and will be getting 50% in Odyssey XXX this year which includes green lipped mussel extract.

I have a growing suspicion that this will outfish my Pacific Tuna this year but CCM do some really good accompanying offerings such as matching pellets, bag mixes and liquids and if I were you they might be worth a look.

Glad you remember it so fondly 🙂 I recall it doing you a common with a black spot on it or something?

Hiya mate, two baits, we released another after some new techniques were stumbled upon as well as ingredients, 3 years in the testing but I won't hijack the thread as it's not a fishmeal Cheers for the kind words

Yep, It did indeed, quite a rare one... and quite probably an upper 30+ by now as I think it was last out a long time ago at 36lb.

I'll always remember the order as the courier picked up a few parcels that day, and one went to an angler in kent, he gobbed off about it being rubbish and couldn't catch despite them showing over the bait, as he was on the phone to me he suddenly went very quiet, turns out he'd spotted an anti tangle sleeve hanging out the top of his bucket, both rigs were still in the bucket, he'd cast out lead clips without hooklinks took me about ten minutes to regain composure on the phone lol

I use DNA SLK, I'm mainly a Barbel angler these days but will take it anywhere with 100% confidence. Just finished my 2nd season on it and have already stocked up on shelf lifes for next season. I started with the freezer baits but switched to the shelfies as I'd heard good things, and not noticed any difference in catch rate whatsoever.

Everything will eat it, as well as Barbel and Chub I've had quite a few Trent Carp and far too many Bream Last session was a week ago and I had Barbel to 12lb plus a 6.6 Chub, all on hard hookers fished over crushed shelf life mixed with hydro spod syrup.

Not saying it's any better than any other bait mentioned here cos I don't know, but I do know it works well and that's all I need to know.
