Hi all
In short, I love my chub bivvy, well made etc. But it's huge packed down and around 20kg all in. I know there are lighter bivs that are a bit smaller pack down etc. But not sure anything I really like.
So, does anyone still make old style bivvies (cough, over priced tents) pole threading style any more? If so, any that have decent head height for the doorway?!? (important).
I don't care about quick up as I generally only fish abroad now for a week+ at a time and don't often move so once it's up, it's up (ooh err)!

Your right though,I loved the way the old Apotheosis used to pack down so compact and light,and the Shakespeare cypry dome as well,now I'm thinking about it the green outbound tent was great as well..
I don't think bivvy design is done and dusted quite yet..

Cheers I'll have a look.
I used to have a JRC geodesic and it packed down to next to nothing. A bit like the avid screenhouse currently.
I also still have an old Shakespeare cypry day shelter, packs down to the size of a small sleeping bag

I had the geodesic. Brilliant design , but once married and having a kid 99% of my fishing is 24 hours max and they were slow up and down.
Wife and I took the Geodisic for a long weekend fishing and it was raining for hours when we wanted to set up. But we knew its pich inner first and thread poles then flysheet so we and the inner would be soaked. So we asked the owner if we could set it up in his barn building. Then carried it down to the lake.
Perfect for France though for a week .

Always get a tent that pitches both together or outer skin first . no point sleeping in a soaking wet tent..

Sorry, I was referring to tents, not strictly relevant to this thread however they still make tents which are pitch inner first. Although God knows why anyone would buy one.

I guess not everyone pitches them in the rain. I've also seen lots that sometimes only pitch the inner and use basically to keep the bugs away like mosquitoes. Warm n dry then no need for the cover.

Q'dos also make a bivvy tent as well
(I do a fair amount of wild camping,I hate being sat at home watching the crap and brainwashing on TV,anyway the pitch outerfirst is the number one required thing I look for in a tent I use a Vango Banshee but some companies like go outdoors own brand pitch inner first nice tents ,but no,...outer ,joined to inner much better)

I would of thought the nearest modern equivalent is Fox's Eurodomes?

The only problem I see with the ngt and qdos so far is the door height seems a little low. I'm too old to be crawling in and out lol. I did have a jrc 2x tg or whatever its called, literally onto my knees to get out, not good lol.
We touched on some of this before in another thread, some of the wild camping stuff looks great and I would gladly sleep under a tarp if just short camping and hidden away in the woods rather than a big open swim

Looks like they are a few years out of production now? But about one of the most recent similar options. I can vaguely picture something else similar ish but still can't remember who made it.

Your right,and until recently Kyham did a one man and two quick erect versions,I've seem em for sale secondhand, and door heights look higher than NGT and Q'dos
I personally had a Lee Jackson mangrove,similar to Kyhams and fox easy domes, I really liked it as it had the non taffeta, built in groundsheet,was sturdy on big lakes,opened up like a brolly,great bit of til I got sugged,slugs died without me realising and then putrified,,. Nice,it had to go after that ,great bivvy though..

What about the JRC Continental Z 2 man, bit old now and 1.7m high but that the total height I think looking at pictures so the door is obviously a bit lower.

Another one just come to me is the Wychwood Rogue Dome, had one of these years ago and got 2 bedchairs in it with room inbetween them packed up really small as well, good luck finding one though but you never know. My error I had the Wychwood extremeis Dome not the rogue Dome.

But an alternative could be the Solar SP Bankmaster? Taller and more ‘tenty' than your average bivvy.

I have a compact and full size screenhouse new unused (I've not used or put either up yet, the full size is for sharing as a base with friends) at the moment, the compact may possibly do the job, but being rather square and not twin skin I expect won't be much fun in poorer weather.
