On the look out for a new set of 3 new reels. Had Daiwa Tournament S 5000T's before and am tempted to get them again. I've also seen the Shimano Power Aero's which look to fit the bill and through a discount via my work I can get them for £290 each. Another that I quite like the look of are the Daiwa Basia DCR's but I noticed that they hold considerably less line than the other 2 I've looked at. I'm not sure if I will realistically be able to get these under £400 either but depending on what people's opinions are on them I may be prepared to go over the budget allowed, but not by too much. Also open to other suggestions for something comparable.
Not sure either what deals may be available in January so trying to form a plan now.
They will be paired with a new set of custom built Torrix (3lb or 3 1/4lb, not decided yet) that I'm probably choosing as another treat to myself in the new year.
The venue I'll be fishing is a 36 acre gravel pit 90% of the time but I'll also be doing the occasional visit to a small club lake of around 3 acres but I don't have enough money to get a second cheaper set up for the smaller water and as said, most of my time will be on the bigger venue. I'll also be using this set up for France hopefully.

There are only a small handful of mass produced reels from any manufacturer that cost more than £400 each

Get the 5000t's. Not the best reel but above all else it's reliable and fishing big pits you will need that 👍🏼

Personal preference but I would take the power airo's at that price, wouldn't want those rods though as for me the 12ft 6inch torrix te is a much nicer blank. If however the fishing is up to 100 yards I'd use what I have, 3ld 12ft hearns and ultegra ci4 5500's, cheaper and a joy to use.

Keep an eye on total fishing, or contact them and ask about offers. I got 3 basia slds for under £1200. £400 a reel, most reels available will be obtainable
tournies are ok, and yes reliable. But they are awful to use. I think, because I have the slds aswell, every time I use the tournies they feel worse and worse in hand.

In what way is it a nicer blank please mate? I was told by the guys in Johnson Ross that the Torrix would cover both the distance if I need it and be forgiving under the tip. I appreciate that I'm not going to get one set of rods to do everything but been told the Torrix will cover most situations.

I have torrix and aviators, and tye aviators are definitely a better blank for bigger water. Little bit more back bone

Thanks Heff. Which of these two is more enjoyable for playing fish though? The smaller water I fish is only around 3 acres and I used to use 2.5lb Century Armalites on which were amazing for playing fish on. The 36 acre pit I fish I had Chimeras in 3lb tc.

Didn't everyone go through this exact same thread for you about a month ago?
If you're not stuck on brand new I'd get a set of the original Castizms for those rods. But I'd also be looking at the Aviator Flex blank over the Torrix.

A nicer blank to play fish than the 12ft 3.25tc, strange what johnson Ross said as I know many of them used the 12ft 6inch torrix te themselves. A rod to cover both waters will be a compromise especially with what you have used, those chimeras in 3lb were a great rod. The aviator flex as suggested may suit you well.

Thanks Goose. I'll have a look at the TE's after Christmas when I go in to the shop. I think you're right about the staff using the TE's as I think it says it on the TE section on their website.

What distance are you looking to fish at on the larger venue as there is little point in having rods capable of going way beyond that and lessening the playing enjoyment, reels wise personally I would choose to balance nicely with the chosen rods.

Can't comment on reels in that price range, I just can't justify spending that on reels for carp Tbh. As long as a reel holds enough line, has a decent drag, and is nice to use and is robust enough then that's perfect, and that can be had for less that half that price. Most expensive reels I ever had were entohs at £300ish and I hated the things. The Penn carbon might be worth a look

Goose, the 36 acre pit I'll initially be fishing in most places will only need me to cast between 80 and 100 yards but there are a few swims where it will be 100 to 110 yards. It's a gravel pit in Hertfordshire. I live in Cambridgeshire now so in a year or two I want to look at a couple of lakes up nearby and these will require a maximum cast of about 120 to 130 yards, that's why I was looking at the Torrix. Going back to the reels, I initially had every intention of getting the 5000T's again but as you pointed out, at just over £290 for the Power Aero I'm drawn to them and by the time I've changed the line clip on the 5000T's there not alot of difference in the price.

Just been on the Penn Website and the only ones I can see that have carbon in the name are yhe Penn Affinity II custom carbon reels RRP £242.99 then you have the Affinity III's but they aren't carbon. The Affinity II custom carbon's look very nice though. Look like a very solid reel.

Lol. No worries mate. It's confusing sometimes with all these new names on products. I keep getting told that the TE in the Torrix TE stands for Terry Edmunds when it's actually Torrix Extreme. Sometimes even the staff in the shops are getting this kind of information wrong so what chance does the customer stand.

Werent they initially named after terry edmunds, as didnt he help develop them, and then worked with the again with the aviators? Then they became torrix extreme after he left them to work with daiwa?

Pretty sure the TE did originally stand for Terry Edmonds. They might have changed that when he stopped using their rods. The Torrix TE was certainly developed with Terry.
