It's not a new thing. Carp are a pest out there as in the USA. Destroying native fish and habitats.

Cannot remember now it was a longtime ago I either watched or read something about Australia or New Zealand where by they had an in invasive species in their river system from memory a type of snail or crayfish something like that anyway it was burrowing tunnels into the banks so when the high waters came the banks were eroding away at a vast rate so they put carp in to eat the evasive species problem was they did such a good job at eating the food source that when it was not as readily available the carp which after sometime had vastly multiplied were then digging away at the holes in the bank to get at the food source, it made the problem a lot worse which is when it was a kill the carp at all costs and illegal to return them.
Doesn't Australia have other issues caused by invasive species..other than carp..
I fear this released on purpose Herpes virus is going to cause much long term harm to the Australian eco system..possibly more so than the carp.
Also.. Man playing god yet again,..remember myxomatosis in this country,a man made ,laboratory created virus..
Makes you question a few things..!.

I remember going to Australia on holiday many years ago and being slightly surprised at their ‘alien species' attitude to carp.
Imet a bloke in a park in Adelaide and he caught a bucketful to serve in a Chinese restaurant !
I also found an article in the local paper (I think it was Alice Springs) about a competition involving throwing frozen carp as far as possible. It was a way of encouraging people to remove them from local waters.
I brought the article home and sent it to a carp magazine here who subsequently printed it. Some of the outraged letters in the next issue were hilarious.....

It's been on the books for a couple of years now, odd how its not been implemented sooner tbh, probably studying potential issues with other species.

Today they are recognized by most states as a Naturalised species, nearly always described in the group of ‘Rough' fish.
The Carp Anglers Group and American Carp Society have an ongoing publicity campaign to counter the false rhetoric that carp are responsible for declines in other fish stocks..it usually turns out that water quality issues are responsible.
Let's at least get this right on a UK based fishing board.

I had no idea about the aussies and the carp. But after the rabbits it doesn't surprise me. The Spanish though? Does that mean all those river ebro trip companies are going to be scuppered? Always fancied doing one of those

I had the beer goggles on and didn't sober up for years .A few lads I know went to the Ebro a few years back and could not believe the carp hardly got fished for,everyone wanted the big cats

Sorry, as far as the USA is concerned I was referring to the Asian carp that are a problem there not Cyprinus carpio.

Pretty much everything is an invasive species in Australia even the majority population 😉
My brother lives in Brisbane. Before he moved, he was an avid carp angler. He's had 10 sessions this year and blanked every time despite prebaiting

Any students out there looking to do thesis or dissertations on "fake news" or the power of disinformative politics this is the topic and it's been going on for decades.
If you believe the Australian government, lakes, ponds, rivers and inland seas in Europe should be stagnant cesspools of death because of carp. Some of their statements are quite frankly laughable.
DEFRA (the AU version of the EA) have done a controlled release of KHV and they recorded a 51% cull rate.
They have also done a cull consequence test by dumping 20 tons of dead carp into a 1000 hectare wetland. Stated by them, the water turned black and recorded close to 0% oxygen levels during the 1 year trial, there was a 99% cull of all sub surface species and fauna and a "distinct" detrimental effect on all surrounding wildlife and birds.
With some estimates stating 1 billion tons of carp in Australian waters, any mass KHV release would be a national environmental disaster beyond all proportions.
(Just my opinion, with some facts)

I watched a documentary on the Murray Cod a few months back, it showed that it's starting to make come back from the brink of extinction, mainly in the river were there was an abundant food source – Carp!

Best put a caviat in that Tim for Asian Carp
I don't understand why these alien Carp aren't used as fertiliser or meal, I know silvers are used as such in other countries. They're certainly there in large enough quanitities and easily harvested as shown in the US. I believe some states in the US are considering using Asian Carp as fertiliser, would be the most sensible use them rather than willfully releasing pathogens into the wild!
