I know that you can fish pop ups and wafters over some freebies but can you also just put a Bollie on a hair rig the same type that you use as freebies ??
Also if your using wafters and popup what should I be putting in my PVA bag as freebies does it matter which kind of bollies I use ?
Thanks I am still learning

Yeah, you can use a bottom bait straight out of the bag, that's no problem.
You could select few the day before you go fishing, put them in small mesh bag an air dry them a bit to toughen the skin up a bit. Also, use extender stops, they pull inside the bait when used on a hair. Makes it a bit harder for the tufties to pull the bait off the hair.
This time of year, just match your hookbait with your freebies. Match the hatch, it's called now. Yahoo!

Yeah, people did it for about 50 years until they realised that they could sell people little tubs of “alternative” hookbaits

Don't tell anyone, but on clear spots I still do.
It is only over weed I use a pop-up.
I've caught loads of fish on bottom baits straight out of the bag.

Bottom baits are brilliant in the right situation. Just make sure that if you do take a bait from the bag, that it will survive a night on the hook. Most good food baits will be too soft after a few hours on the hair. That is why many use hardened bottom baits on the rig

I wish I could get a “corn shaped” pop up version of the bottom baits - like a bait topper. I often use a trimmed down bit of cork to stop soft baits coming off the hair which had been left in a bit of the liquids from the bait+GLM/Liver powder, but a lot of places are banning artificials (which is fair enough). The mixed colour 8mm Northern Specials are good for this, but a bit obvious smell wise.....

not exactly what you're looking for but tails up do some corn shaped pop ups - 'Cornz' I think
also - is cork classed as artificial? Might be a loophole there

Not the same as my bottom bait tho.
Plastic baits are just as natural as cork......oil comes out of the ground doesn't it 😂

we chuck in kgs of bottom baits straight from the bag that the carp eat happily, so why do pple think that a pot of "Special" hookbaits are better?
always baffled me that one

Baffles me as well.
I was brought up on your hookbait had to mimic your freebies, and being a 'if it ain't broke' type of person I will continue to do so wherever possible.

Been using bottom baits pretty much exclusively for the last 5 years or so, even if the bottom is dirty with lots of debris.

why do pple think that a pot of "Special" hookbaits are better?
A few reasons:
- Varying levels of buoyancy to suit different rigs/substrates
- Attempting to get the bites that bit quicker with the use of colour or supercharged attractors
- Longevity (many decent baits barely last a night on the deck)
- Better resistance to nuisance species
I've no doubt that there are plenty of anglers that use special hookbaits because an advert told them to, but that's not the only reason.

Because they won't survive In most waters with little fish or crays
Because sometimes we want them to pick something else up first
Because your rig won't sit very well over the crap on the lakebed
Many many reasons to use something else
But I do agree that a matching one has its place for sure

a) Harden or air dry your bottom bait
b) maybe, but not overly convinced if they are feeding over kgs of the same food item
c) agree
d) agree to a point

Oh I love that!
Still, you can't beat a special in certain situations.Single hook bait fishing. However over bait they will eat practically anything as has been proved time and time again!

Use a matching pop up. Doesn't have to be different.
Don't get me wrong, at the start of the year i promised myself I'd only have 1 flavour of “alternative”, but I've now got 6 😂

Matching pop ups........outrageous 😂😂😂 I'm a big fan from may to late autumn. And I mean made from the basemix so it's as close as it needs to be!
